Windows 10: Windows 10 Photos app may never complete adding folders...

I added several photos and videos folder from my NAS to Windows 10 Photos on two laptops and a desktop almost three months ago. There are more than a hundred folders and on the order of 38,000 photos and videos out in these trees. In the last three months, I have kept Photos running essentially all the time I've been logged into these machines. For weeks at a time, I've turned off Sleep on one or more of these machines. They all still occasionally pronounce how proud they are that they've created a new album or two.


The thing is, each machine still has dozens of subfolders with tens of thousands of images it hasn't found AT ALL. The folder on Photos is just a grey box. When I go into that folder, it may say "No readable photos, videos, or folders found." Or it my not. Either way, there are readable images there. In some cases, images added in the last two weeks, or an hour ago, show up on one PC, not on the others. or not at all. The fastest machine that's been running Photos the most has found the most images in the most folders. The slowest machine that runs the least has found the fewest images. But there are still cases on all machines where some folders show some but not all of the images in that NAS folder. Task Manager app history shows that Photos has used hundreds of CPU hours and petabytes of network transfer on each machine. I enabled file transfer logging on the NAS several times. I can see each machine accessing thousands of images in almost random order. I occasionally see them accessing images that do not show in the corresponding Photos app folder. Tens of thousands of accesses are to photos long since indexed and visible in the Photos app.


As an additional data point, Sony PlayMemories Home, Adobe Photoshop Elements Organizer, and Capture One 20 Express for Sony have ALL acquired these images successfully, and successfully find added images in minutes Adobe, Sony to hours Capture One. Microsoft Photos has been at it for months and can't get the job done.


Has anybody else tried Windows 10 Photos app with large collections of images? Has Microsoft? Will it ever get better?

Windows 10 Photos App Not Displaying all Photos and Folders

I've been trying to research this issue and have tried a number of fixes. Here is the situation:

• I am using a network drive for my photos
• "Collection" will not show all of my photos - many are missing.
• If I go to "Folders" view:
  • Some will show only a subset of the photos.
  • Others will not show any photos at all.
  • Several folders don't show up at all (yet if I search for them in the search bar, they do)
• If in Windows Explorer I click on any of the missing photos or folders, they all open with no issues with the photos App

I have tried a number of fixes:

• I have used the windows app troubleshooter
• I reset the photos app
• I have added and removed the folders in the photos app settings
• I uninstalled and re-installed the photos app
• I "refreshed" folders within the app
• I changed permissions for the photos folder
  • Added SYSTEM to all sub-folders and files

In all I have spent hours trying to get this to work - and its not. I really want to use the photos app to manage my extensive library of family photos. Any other suggestions to get this to work? Is this a known issue with Windows 10 Photos App?

I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it helps:

Method 1:

I suggest you to change the Default apps in the setting app and verify the result. You may follow the steps in the below:

• Go to settings and system.
  
• Click on Default Apps and select the appropriately.
  

Method 2:

I suggest you to reinstall Photo app using the PowerShell command
and reinstall using the Windows store. Follow the below steps.

• Open the　Start　menu, type　Windows PowerShell　in the search bar.
  
• Right click on the　Windows　PowerShell　and select　Run as　administrator.
  
• Enter the below command to uninstall the Photo app.
  

• 　　get-appxpackage　　*Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage

Hi Ralph & Barbara,

We suggest that you reset Windows Photo app. Follow the steps below:

• Press Windows key + R.
• Type %appdata%\..\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Photo_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState
• Delete all the contents of the folder.
