Windows 10 possible bug: Windows updates sharing does not respect lan setting

This affects certainly build 1909, possibly the newer ones.

Description: we have a number of Windows 10 systems on a 10 private network. This is a WAN network spanning many cities, but our LAN occupies a small 10.X.Y.0/24 ie netmask 255.255.255.0 portion.

We have enabled these systems to share Windows updates with computers in the LAN, to speed up updates. Our LAN has only a 2Mbps link to the WAN. After receiving complains from users on this LAN we discovered that the 2Mbps was saturated. Investigating issues it seemed that our systems were serving these Windows updates to other 10.q.v.w hosts that do not reside in our LAN.

Possible cause: the Windows update mechanism considers the 10 network as an entire 10/8 one, disregarding the fact that it can be allocated to smaller segments. That is, it does not take into account the local subnet /24 in our case, or whatever the out-of-our-lan hosts have, definitely not /8 though.

Lacking a firewall to drop incoming TCP traffic to local 7xxx/TCP which is the Windows update port, IIRC, we had to completely disable this p2p mechanism for updates, leading to slower updates.

I do not know for certain if this is a bug or a feature. I do know that it is killing network bandwidth, considering the number of Windows 10 hosts he have on the LAN.

    :)

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows 10 possible bug: Windows updates sharing does not respect lan setting

Remote Desktop, Windows 10, Need help with how to set up sharing

Yeah, I know it's a bad idea, but I was trying to get as open as I could to see if it was possible at all. It's back to only shared for my user now. Yeah, so that's it, this isn't a pro version of windows. Guess I'm back to the $350 KVM switch idea. My desk has no room for any more monitors.
