Thanks OldMike65. I'm likely wrong about this but as I understand it, each backup software has it's own file extension and you have to work with backups made by it, with the same software. My external HDD now has the full system backup and incremental back done in AOMEI. If I understand your suggestion right, you're saying I should do a full system backup " Just make 1 complete image backup to that drive "with Macromedia on the same partition of the same drive with AOMEI. Are you sure that can be done?

 

You install Macrium Reflect on your C-Drive .....then run it from your C-drive, BUT have Macrium put the image backup on your external drive. Root dir would be fine, no special folder is needed. Macrium has no problem running from a C drive. Macrium will not interfere with your other backup files at all. You can even run Macrium from a USB bootable drive also. But in this case just would like to see if Macrium has any problems. Install Macrium on your C drive, run it, tell Macrium which drive to place its backup image.....that's it.

 

My AOMEI is installed in my local drive C: and the external drive I backup C: to is the one labeled "BackupOfC:". I didn't know the backup files of different backup programs could be stored on the same backup drive. I guess they must seek out their respective backup images when needed and disregard other images. It took me a while to find the time to do the Macrium test, it being a 500mb+ file to download and do my pre-backup prep, but I got it done. Since this was just a test, it did install ok and I tried to see it would just do an incremental backup since a second full system backup probably wouldn't fit on my backup drive. I didn't have the time to figure out the Macrium UI and it's not as user friendly as AOMEI's is. Anyway, Macrium seems to have tried a full system backup which failed due to a shortage of space. So, to answer you question, the test seems to show it does work ok. However, it failed some time well after initiating the backup, which is odd if it's any good, as it seems to me it should have measured the remaining capacity before it started the backup. What does this test tell you? Shall I wipe my backup drive and try a fresh full system backup with AOMEI?

 

Well, it's been over a week and I haven't heard from anyone yet. What I decided to do was to format my external backup drive then try to run AOMEI to do a full system backup. That worked and this last weekend I also had it do an incremental backup. I might as well uninstall Macrium now since it's not free.

Win10 is generally working ok. It still crashes from time to time and 80% of the time I put it to sleep, it shuts down instead. Pretty exasperating especially when I have a lot of windows open I'm working with when I put it to sleep. Maybe the August upgrade will be more stable.

The problems you describe are not normal or prevalent. I have none of them.

Also, Macrium Reflect Free is free, no $$$$. Macrium Reflect Home Edition is $69.95 (over priced in my opinion but I have it anyway).

 

*Ditto to all that. In addition, you're comment about Macrium should know before it starts how much space it will need..... Macrium does compression. The default of medium will generally result in a 40-45% compression rate. Many factors are involved, including files that are already compressed. The size of your partition to be backed up is quite large (immense, actually). A "normal" OS partition and it's supporting partitions will range from ~25-60+ GB. Varies also with how much personal data is there.

The exact space requirement is unknown up front.

You're right, Macrium does have a free version and that's what I downloaded. I'm almost positive there was some "buy now" pop up that got me to think it was trialware. A quick comparison with AOMEI doesn't show any real benefit for my basic needs like the ability to create a clone and a recovery disk. It doesn't offer incremental backups, password protection or encryption. One advantage I see is it seems to originate from Germany and AOMEI from China. AOMEI's support has been responsive in the past although not in perfect English, they did seem genuinely interested in explaining things as best they could.

 

Macrium is UK based in Manchester. Paragon is German based.

The Free version does differential backups which although less space efficient, offer a higher data integrity. Problem with incs, if one gets corrupted, all subsequent incs. are useless. Diffs are independent of each other.

 

Free version does include making a Rescue Media, thumb or DVD. And the ability to add a Rescue bootable partition to the system. I have several other OS's installed, but this is what it would look like:

 

That's a good point. So if backup software offers incremental backups and provides a "Check back integrity" option after the backup, that's still not as reliable as a differential backup?

Wow F14, you have a complicated setup - at least from my point of view. It's good it can handle that.

Lots of us on here only use Macrium Reflect, as its one The Best image backup programs around. *Smile

 

I can only give you my take on it. With the capacity and cost today of an external 1TB drive (3.0), full backups are the best option. With verify. Sure, it's gonna take a little longer, but you'll have the whole pie in one piece, verified. Very easy to schedule and maintain multiple copies based on your needs. I keep a rolling 14 copies, full. I backup every day, so that's 2 weeks. It gets ejected and placed on the shelf. I've never found 15-20 minutes at the end of the day, while I'm fixing dinner or something, to be a high cost for piece of mind.
