  1. Windows 10 Power & Sleep settings and scheduled overnight backups

    To all,

For many years going back to Windows XP days and a few different backup softwares going back to NTBackup and now Acronis, I have been running scheduled overnight backups 2 nights a week. I run 2 different backups with a gap of about 1 1/2 hours between them just in case the 1st takes longer than expected to complete. This can happen when after a big Windows Update, defragmenting is turned back on which results in a much bigger incremental backup - and - I forget to turn defragmenting off after the update.

At some point in time, and I do not remember when, I saw that the backups were not completing so I set Sleep to never. I really would like to have my computer sleep after a certain period of time when it is not in use without disrupting my backups. As mentioned earlier, I started this backup schedule back in Windows XP days. So today with Windows 10, will Sleep recognize a very active resource intense background process or does it just look at active foreground processes where I am actively engaged with the application?

    Suggestions are welcome.

    Thank you,

    Steve

    :)

  2. How to run overnight Scheduled Task on a Surface Pro 4

I have a scheduled task set to run overnight (1 AM) on my Surface Pro 4, however, it does not run overnight. It appears that this task will not run when the Surface is in sleep mode. It runs when I log into it in the morning.

How do I get a scheduled task to run overnight on a Surface Pro 4? Is it possible to do this without changing the power settings?

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

We understand that you are facing issues with the Windows 10 Sleep, we will look into this for you. However, in order to get clarity and to assist you accordingly, please reply with the answers to the questions below.

    • What is the make and model of your system?
    • Was there a major change or an update on your system, prior to which you weren't facing this issue?

Meanwhile, this issue could be related to the Hybrid sleep and the Fast Startup. Hence, I would suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it works for you.

Steps to turn off Hybrid Sleep:

    1. Click on Start icon.
    2. Type Control Panel and press Enter.
    3. Click on Power Options, then click on Change plan settings.
    4. Click on Change advanced power settings and expand
      Sleep
      option.
    5. Now expand Allow hybrid sleep and then change settings to
      Off.
    6. Click on Apply and then OK.

Steps to turn off Fast Startup:

    1. Click on the Start icon.
    2. Type Control Panel and press Enter.
    3. Click on Power Options.
    4. Click on Choose what the power buttons do.
    5. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
    6. Under Shutdown settings, uncheck the Turn on fast startup box.
    7. Click on Save changes. This will turn off fast startup.

Restart the system and check if the issue still persists.

We would also like you to open command prompt (Admin) after the PC wakes up. (Type in Windows search
CMD and then right click on it, select Run as Administrator)

Then type the command as mentioned in the /lastwake & /energy
    section from this Powercfg command-line
    options
    article.

    We await your response.

Windows 10 Falls Asleep Despite "Never" Sleep Settings

    Hi Tarantino,

Regarding your concern, it is most likely to be caused by a scheduled task. We suggest that you check your
Task Scheduler for unwanted scheduled tasks. Kindly do the following steps below before 10PM:

    • Type task scheduler on the search bar.
    • Click on Task Scheduler.
    • Under Actions, click on Display All Running Tasks.
    • Once All Running Tasks pops up, kindly check for a scheduled sleep that is set to trigger every 10PM.
    • Select the scheduled sleep, then press End Task.

Once you're done with the steps above, kindly check if your computer will still go to sleep at 10PM.

Let us know if you need further assistance with your concern.
