  1. Windows 10 Preview stats: Two-thirds of testers live dange

I have just completed using W-10 a backup to a eSata ssd.
It took about 8 min. the rest of the time I use changing drive letters so I can find what is what on three ssd's.
I haven't made a rescue disk as of yet.
I'm wondering if I could use the IOS W-10 disk I burned to install the backup if need be. Haven't tried and probably won't unless I need the backup. I'm thinking the W-10 disc should have what is needed.

Please somebody correct me if my beliefs are wrong.

  2. When the TP was first released I thought "To hell with everything!" Backed up some of the user sheit from 8.1 then did a clean install with no al boot or anything. Some people may say I was careless but as someone out there mentioned, this is the best thing to do to really stress my rig. It has been working like a charm from the very instant I installed it. Also, I store all my files on external drives and only have OS and applications on the main drive. If it would have been a total mess and disaster, I could as easily just reinstall 8.1. My rig was also in ill need of a clean sweep anyway *Wink

  3. As you might suspect, tracking done a particular file in all of that data is horrendously difficult. *Smile

I could purge all of my old images (pre-last new hardware install) but that would probably only save a few hundred GB.

Perchance, are you aware of Agent Ransack - a speedy, free file searching utility?

I don't see how anyone could declare this beta as their main OS, it has no App management what-so-ever, that is just silly.

  6. I'm not (I've seen it mentioned in various threads on SevenForums).

It can search inside HDD images?

Still, the problem is more likely to be that I have forgotten the name than which folder a file is in. *Smile

It won't search inside backup images unless they are mounted I believe (I don't think anything can).

I was going to do a re-install of Windows 7 HP anyway, as my existing installation had some problems.
Instead, I just went ahead and installed Windows 10 developer preview.
That was two weeks ago, and I've had a busy fortnight, with three important photo shoots, and hundreds of images to process.
For this I've been using Adobe Lighroom, Photoshop, NikEfexPro, and Google Picasa.
I've also been using Ebay a lot, social networking (G+ and Facebook), general browsing, streaming TV, usual email etc, and interacting with a couple of Android devices.

Everything has run very smoothly, and I have not had any issues. I'd almost forgotten I was running "beta" software. *Party

It doesn't mean we deleted our main OS. We mean we try to use it as a day to day OS whenever possible. For other important and sensitive tasks, we just reboot to the official ones (Win 7 in my case).

You can't test an OS by just installing it and browsing through it. You have to use it the way you use your regular OS to see if things are working the same way or not.

  10. No one should expect that all insiders will read whatever Microsoft Developers said. It is a sure thing, usually many people don't care about whatever is written. They simply download, install and use without keeping some points or instructions in mind. And later, if something happens, they will be first to blame Microsoft. Isn't that rude ?? Actually it became habit of majority. We all should have a backup!

    Found this on their site:
Basic searches are relatively easy. You choose all or part of a file name to search for, optional text within a file, and the drive or directory to search. Agent Ransack can dig into binary files, including .exe files, to pull out matching text, but can't search within .zip files or other archives (for that you'll need the paid version of the software, FileLocator Pro).

If interested you might shoot them the question - I have not had the need to do that and as suggested by A Guy, I mount the image.

I guess that is why I can't use it daily, we use Media Center extensively, and it isn't available for TP, so it is kind of useless to us otherwise.

I wonder if writers would make such a fuss about installing Windows 8.1 update 2.

The point about testing is well taken, plus Win10 locks a lot of normal operations (you must receive updates!)
As the preview goes through the cycles, there will be disruption - things will be broken and fixed or disabled.

When the RTM arrives, you will have to remove the Preview release anyway. So yeah, run Win10 on a test machine, as a dual boot, virtual HD native boot, or VM.

Wrong on Media Center. There is a thread on this here in the 10 forums. . . (please don't ask me where my head isn't working very well today. . .The reason I know this is I am running it now, and the reason is because I found out how to install from the 10's.

  15. Thanks for that info. *Smile

I sometimes mount my Macrium images and then retrieve individual files.
