Windows 10 printer share fails after re- logging in to client

I have a printer attached to one Windows 10 computer the host on my private network, and I wish to use it from another the client. With some difficulty see below, I can set up and use the shared printer on the client, but if I log out from the client, and then log back in using the same account, the printer share no longer works.

I have sharing enabled on the printer host, with the most permissive settings: for both private and guest/public networks, I have turned on file and printer sharing, and also network discovery. In addition, I have turned on the automatic setup of network connected devices where it is available i.e. private networks. In the All Networks section, I have turned off password protected sharing, and, for good measure, selected 'turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the public folders' and dropped the encryption standard to the lowest 40- and 56-bit option. To be doubly sure, I set the client to the same permissive settings.

When I try to set up the share on the client computer, it is unable to find the network printer, depite having discovery turned on as described above. When I enter the host address and click 'browse', it prompts me for the name and password of an account on the host, despite password protected sharing being turned off. Having done that, the printer becomes visible and I can set it up and use it, but if I log off the client and log on again, I cannot print to that printer - it says that I do not have the correct credentials, but it does not present me with an option to enter them which is not what I want, anyway.

What do I need to do so that I can get sharing to work according to the options I selected in the sharing dialog?

    :)

    Hello Wayne,

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps:

    • Go to control panel and click on the Devices and printers.
    • Right click on the printer and go to properties.
    • Click on sharing tab and check the box for share this printer
and Render print jobs on client computers.

Hope this information helps. Reply to the post with an updated status of the issue so that we can assist you further.

    Can't share printer—getting error message

    Step 1: Go to store.
Step 2: Buy a less shitty printer.
Step 3: Pick up some beer while you are there.
Step 4: Enjoy both your new printer and your beer.

In all seriousness, I have had more issues with Lexmark printers and their shitty drivers then any other manufacturer, HP is a close second though.

However, if you don't want to get a new printer*Laugh , and I can understand that, when my Lexmark was giving me the same troubles in Win7(and Vista) I had to make sure the Windows firewall was ON and the firewall service was enabled and running. After I shared it I could re-disable the firewall and firewall services.

    Can't share printer—getting error message

Yeah, I have windows firewall disabled, and I don't use any other firewall... mostly to prevent stupid issues like this.

None taken... and yeah, I do.
