Windows 10: Windows 10 Pro 100% utilisation of hard drive

Hi,


This is an old one that is asked many times. I have researched answers for several months and still cannot find a solution so any ideas would be welcome.


I have a nine month old Windows 10 Pro box. 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD boot drive and 2TB conventional data drive. CPU is 12 core Ryzen 5. It is the data drive that frequently goes to 100% and when that happens the PC is lost, a reboot is the only solution.


The SSD (C has 130GB free. The D: drive has over 1TB free.


I have 30 years experience as an IT Pro - from software engineer to support manager & senior project manager - and I have researched answers for several months. I have tried just about everything I have seen. I disabled indexing. I have recreated the index. I have made performance analysis in the drives. I have looked for any pattern of events that precedes the issue. Nothing. Of course I have adequate cache, etc. I have checked for malware, etc.


I can't get any useful info from Task manager or Sysinternals Process Explorer. Please see attached screen shots which show what is running when I get a 100% lock up. I am running Task manager under administrator privileges and it simply doesn't show which processes are hogging the hard drive. Note: I have sorted the processes by hard drive utilisation.


This problem never happened in Windows 7 Pro and its diagnostic utilities were useful. Those in Windows 10 simply do not give me the information necessary to resolve this issue.


Does anyone have any practical suggestions for how I can work this issue? But please do not ask me to rebuild my system for giggles because I am not not going to to do that unless I have some very strong evidence that it would resolve the issue. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windowed Hard Drives

On the contrary, showing off "slow tech" by adding a window to a hard drive is a "dumb" idea. Do you really want to be showing off a whole "7200-10000 RPM of power" or would you rather show off a plain SSD drive? (If you really desire to "show off")

Adding any window to any drive is just stupid. I just suggested an easier option for you since manufactures don't put windows on the latest hard drives.
