Windows 10: Windows 10 Pro 1903 not sharing iPhone network via USB tether

iPhone not recognized as a USB network source Win 10 Pro 1903
This is more of an FYI for others with the same problem and
with blackouts somewhat more important.
I recall this working last year.
Sharing via the USB would be the best choice to get the desktop browsing in a blackout.
But it seems a driver is missing and cannot be installed.
I have three computers to test this.

Surface Pro 6 allows selection of iPhone network
Surface Pro 5 does not see the iPhone as an option
Desktop Win 10 Pro 1903

What I have tried:
Installed CLEAN Win10 Pro 1903 on desktop with only iTunes 12 installed; does not recognize iPhone as network source
All other iTunes/iPhone functions work.
I examined Device manager; Surface Pro 6 has a driver that I cannot get on the other two.
I tried to get the missing drivers (%ProgramFiles%\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers)
Uninstalling iTunes 12 and installing iTunes 10 produced a failed install but did leave the drivers in the above folder.
However, trying to manually install the .inf file fails as the driver is not compatible with Windows 10.
I cannot find a Win10 compatible driver anywhere.
The two computers that will not work have one Win10 Portable Devices driver: Media Transfer Protocol (MTP)

It does not allow USB network sharing.

My solution was to buy a USB wifi adapter ($7 @ Amazon) which gives me acceptable net bandwidth.

USB tethering of iPhone 7 doesn't work on Windows 10

Can anyone help with this please?

I followed the steps here to set up USB tethering of my iphone to my Win 10 laptop but it doesn't work: https://www.howtogeek.com/213203/how-to-use-your-iphone’s-hotspot-or-a-usb-cable-for-tethering/

I have the latest version of iTunes installed on the laptop and my iphone appears as connected but it does not appear when I click 'Show available networks' in the network status window.

In my Device Manager, it also appears as 'Unknown device' under 'Other devices' (maybe this is the problem - if so, where do I find a suitable driver to update the missing driver?) and as Apple iPhone' under 'Portable Devices' . I can't see anything under
the 'Network adapaters' category that suggests it is connected.

Windows 10 and Iphone USB tethering

But the iphone is able to connect to Windows 10 laptop. The problem is I am not able to use USB tethering because under the network, the apple ethernet driver has an exclamation mark.

Yes, iOS is up to date and wifi tethering works fine, it's the USB tethering that's the problem.

I uninstalled the iPhone in device manager as you suggested, restarted the laptop, then reconnected the iPhone via USB and I now have a new Network adapter appearing in device manager called Apple Mobile Device Ethernet and no unknown device under Other
devices.

USB tethering with the iPhone is now working - hooray!

There is still no sign of a Mobile Device Support folder in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple though so I guess I just got lucky. If it fails again, I'll try cross posting
in Using iPhone - Apple Community as you suggest.
