Why did you wipe out my Linux root to create a recovery partition? I'm lucky there wasn't much of anything on it besides the OS and/or duplicated things, but it could have been very bad. Windows is definitely coming off my other dual boot boxes.

The "Free Space" used to be a root partition. The "Recovery Partition" didn't exist. Also, I'm fairly certain C: was bigger and the 350 MB at the beginning was part of it.

Really, I'm not as concerned about data loss. Everything that needs to be saved is duplicated somewhere. What bugs me is that there wasn't a warning or a dialog to give me a chance to move my stuff if you really needed the space. =/

  2. Windows 10 Installer deletes linux partition

I have a Ubuntu and windows dual-boot and while upgrading to widows 10 during one of the restarts grub wouldn't boot a partition and went into recovery so I used a Ubuntu live CD and GParted informed
me that my linux partition was missing. It was listed as un-allocated. This means that the Windows 10 installer deleted that partition. (The helpdesk told me to post it here)

    How To: Create recovery partition.

it worked when i copied all the files of the disk to the recovery partition i created, but i had to use WinPE tab to add the entry.

    Type: WIM Image (Ramdisk)
    Name: Recovery
    Path: Z:\Sources\boot.wim
    and hit Add Entry
I tried it in VirtualBox and it worked.
At first, it would add a second "Windows 7" entry to the list, but when the installation is finished, the old one is deleted. (I formatted only C: partition)

Will deleting the factory partition render the recovery disk useless?

More than likely it is of no use NOW . The recovery disk is nothing more than drivers and some BS . You will not get the OS and recovering from a recovery disk only works if the drive partition is fine and has been untouched by any one .
The best thing to do is delete all the partitions and just install windows on the HDD make your own recovery disk and your done not to mention you get all that drive space back .
