  1. Windows 10 Pro N - Laptop camera crashes when tries to save video

    The problem:

The device driver installed by Windows for the webcam on the laptop makes it so that it is unable to save video.

Taking a picture works well and puts an image into the Camera Roll folder.

The video preview from the camera works fine, and shows the video stream. Tweaking the options for resolution or image stabilization works fine as well in the video preview.

When trying to actually record the video the Camera app crashes silently (just vanishes).

In the Camera Roll folder an MP4 file appears but the file size is 0 bytes.

A similar situation happens when trying to use the camera through Skype.

It seems some kind of video encoding error.

In such cases an EventViewer log application error is found mentioning "Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\nvEncMFTH264.dll" which suggests nVidia, but I cannot understand why nVidia would be doing anything with the Camera.

If anything it should be using the Intel GPU to do something since the system is running in Balanced power mode and the GPU priority configuration is at Auto, which on the desktop means the Intel GPU is active instead.

Please suggest what can be done.

    What I tried:

    • Before trying anything with the camera the System was installed with latest drivers from the manufacturer and then updated with the latest from Intel, nVidia and the latest Windows updates were installed, BIOS is also updated to the latest
    • Before even being able to do anything with the camera I got the message that I need to install Media Feature Pack, which I did from here, and it worked fine. (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4057437/media-feature-pack-for-windows-10-n-april-2018)
    • Tried to search for a driver for the camera but oddly the driver is from Microsoft and there is no other driver
    • Tried to remove and reinstall the driver via Device Manager - did not help
    • Tried to change Camera settings - did not help
    • Reset the Camera app through Windows Settings - did not help
    • Tried to create a new user profile and test there - did not help
    • Tried Windows Update again - did not help

    Save BIOS crash.

When I try to save BIOS, yes, it happened everytime (I will try it more just in case).

More rarely, it happens by just opening it, it happens in, maybe 1/10 tries, when it doesn't, GPUZ seems to work fine (sensors, detection and such).

    Laptop Camera

Thanks for providing the results after completing the steps we provided. Since you're still getting the error message “Your camera cannot be found” along with the error code "0xA00F4244 (0xC00DABED)", we suggest that you follow the steps below
to reset the Camera app on your Windows 10 computer:

    • Press the Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
    • From the options presented select System, then click on
      Apps & features
      located on the left pane.
    • Locate the Camera app from the list and select it.
    • Select the Advanced options link and then choose Reset.
    • When the pop-up notification is shown just click on the Reset
      button once more.
    • Once all the steps are complete, kindly reboot your computer.

Completing this steps will clear the cache of the Camera app and allow it to re-recognize any video capture devices connected to your computer.

    Regards.
