    My E: drive has a directory called $$pendingfiles it contains just over 2000 files. What is their purpose? Is it safe to delete them to free some space? How can I delete them? My pc appears to be working fine. Thank you.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

    Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

    Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Windows Updates fail & $$PendingFiles on drive root

    After a rebuild of my machine I did a fresh reinstall of Win 10 Pro on my SSD (standard C:\)

    I then created symbolic links for the following directories and files to my WD Black (D:\)

    C:\Users --> D:\Users (Directory Symbolic link)

    C:\ProgramData --> D:\ProgramData (Directory Symbolic link)

    C:\Program Files --> D:\Program Files (Directory Symbolic link)

    C:\Program Files (x86) --> D:\Program Files (x86) (Directory Symbolic link)

    C:\Windows\Installer --> D:\Installer (Directory Symbolic link)

    C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution --> D:\SoftwareDistribution (Directory Symbolic link)

    C:\ pagefile, hiberfil, swapfile .sys --> D:\ (symbolic links)

    Now, when I run Windows Update, it fails with the generic 'we couldn't install the updates, blah, blah, blah... and the following event is logged in eventvwr:

    Event ID 20

    Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070011: Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3213986).

    A few seconds before the WU event is logged, this one is also logged, and I can't tell if they're related.

    Event ID 10016

    The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID

    {6B3B8D23-FA8D-40B9-8DBD-B950333E2C52}

    and APPID

    {4839DDB7-58C2-48F5-8283-E1D1807D0D7D}

    to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

    After the updates fail, there are a number of $$PendingFiles dropped on the root of D:\

    I've tried all the usual suspects, including the standalone install/update, as well as everything in this:

    Absolutely stumped at this stage.

    Directory Size Utility

    First of all nice utility, Mindweaver!
    Second of all, it's so nice to see that this section ain't dead.

    I have a few questions/suggestions, maybe you'd want to see ...
    • maybe you rename Get Folder button caption to something more intuitive? Add Folder, Get Folder Size, Check Folder Size or something like that?
    • Could you add subfolder files to the right pane? (it can be a tickbox with include sub dirs)
    • maybe you also add export list to excel?
    • there's delete file button maybe you add delete folder button too?
    • and finally maybe you can add UP button for directories?
