Windows 10 (Pro) recently started moving some desktop icons to secondary display when attached

My laptop moves between home and work. At home there is just the laptop screen, at work there is a docking station with a keyboard, mouse and display. The laptop is set to extend the desktop onto the secondary display - the laptop display is marked as display #1, the external monitor as display #2.

I have 19 icons on my desktop arranged in two columns down the left hand edge of the screen (10 in each column, one

hole in the 2nd column). There are also two greyed out desktop.ini icons which form the start of a 3rd column.

Last week (week before?) for the first time when I unhibernated the laptop while docked at work 10 of the icons and one of the desktop.ini icons moved to the second screen arranged in two columns down the left hand edge. Its a bit odd in that they appear to have the same horizontal position they had on the 1st monitor - two of the icons from the 1st column moved and 8 of the icons in the 2nd column. One desktop.ini also moved but its further down that it was on the 1st screen.

I picked them up and moved them back to the primary screen. I used my laptop at home for a couple of days and the next time when I brought it back to work and powered it on, the same thing happened. I just updated the video driver and after the screen went blank/came back, the same thing happened - the icons are redistributed. It does seem to be a fixed pattern each time this happens.

I assume this is somehow related to the windows update from 6/14/19 (KB4503327).

    :)

Windows 10 desktop icons not in order

In ccleaner, did you uncheck cleaning the icon cache... have not used in a while; however, I think that is what the option is called.

Now, if you are setting the icons and they move after you have set the settings and not changed them... you may have the "Random Windows 10 Icon movement problem".
Some people have this and some don't.

Here is a thread on the problem at Windows10 forums: Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving

  3. Desktop icons scattering after connecting secondary display

    Hello,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    1. Are you aware of any changes being made to the PC?
    2. Which version of Windows 10 you are using currently?
    3. Are you using a HDMI cable or a VGA cable to connect the display?
    4. How are you re-arranging the icons?
    5. Have you tried connecting the display first and then switching on the PC?

I suggest you to try the steps mentioned below and check if that helps.

    Method 1:

Try aligning the icons to grid.

    1. Right click on the desktop and click on View.
    2. Now click on auto arrange icons and click on
      align icons to grid.

    Method 2:

Try updating the display and monitor drivers. Refer the article
    update drivers in Windows 10
    .

    Hope it helps.

Desktop Icons Moved to Secondary Monitor

After the last update/restart cycle of Win 10, all the desktop icons moved to the secondary monitor. Yes, I can manually move them back but that is not a valid option. So many things do NOT WORK in Win 10. I hate having to debug your software!
