Windows 10 Pro Shuts off Monitor during Session connected with HDMI cable

We have recently set up a new computer...

At random times sometimes more than once a day, sometimes only once a week or less our monitor LG 27GL850 suddenly appears to shut off. Sometimes disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable solves the problem. The first couple of times we had to do a nasty hard boot. Now we've written down the keyboard sequence required to do a blind shutdown, but that still means we lose any unsaved data.

Today, the blind shutdown failed to bring up the monitor but a subsequent HDMI cable pull/replug did the trick.

We've done our research on the web and ensured the machine is loaded with all the latest drivers, so this isn't a driver issue. We've also ensured that our monitor is set toNever sleep our habit is always to power it off if we walk away from it.

Because an HDMI cable pull/replug often works, it's unlikely to be a motherboard problem. And we are trying a different HDMI cable to see if that helps, but that could take 30 minutes or a week+ to find out if the new cable fixes the issue.

We haven't re-seated the video card. That will be an absolute last resort because all our research points to the fact that this is a well-known, Window 10 bug that also existed in Windows 7.

Our research says that Windows 10 is sending a signal to Pin 19 in the HDMI cable and for some stupid reason "decides" that the monitor is missing. This results in the monitor being disconnected from the system - as far as the computer is concerned.

According to our research, Pin 19 is the Windows 10 "plug and play" pin hot plug detect so it makes sense that unplugging/reconnecting the HDMI cable usually corrects the issue. Therefore, it's highly likely that the culprit is Windows 10, not the monitor, HDMI cable, motherboard, drivers, wiring or video card as so many discussions imply most of those discussions don't even include Windows as a possible issue.

So, our question is: Is there a digital way to ensure Pin 19 doesnot check the monitor connection? That is, is there a way to turn off Windows 10, Pin 19 checking? We don't hot-swap monitors, so we don't need the "plug and play" option.

The solution discussed multiple times in our research suggests physically blocking Pin 19 with electrical tape not something we're going to do or, purchasing an HDMI cable with PIN 19 disabled which we will do - butonly if there is not a Windows 10 solution to a Windows 10 problem.

Is what we're looking for possible?

    :)

  3. Lap top to television screen by hdmi cable

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community. We are glad to help you.

I would suggest you to try the below steps and check if it works:

    Kindly follow the below steps:

    Step 1:

I would suggest you to disconnect the HDMI cable and try to connect it by following these steps.

    a. Turn off your computer and position it within easy reach of your TV. Disconnect the monitor, but leave the mouse and keyboard connected.

    b. Connect the appropriate video cable from your computer's output to your TV.

    c. Turn on your TV and set it to the input that matches the output on your computer. You might need to refer to the user's guide included with your TV for instructions on how to do this.

    d. Turn on your computer.

    e. You should see Windows displayed on your TV. If the screen looks stretched, or part of the screen seems cut off, you probably need to adjust the screen resolution in Windows.

    f. If you can't see Windows on your TV, you might need to reconnect the computer to your monitor and adjust the screen resolution before you connect to your TV.

Step 2: To adjust screen resolution follow this steps:

    • Right click on the screen and select
      Display settings.

    • Click on Advanced display settings.

    • Set the resolution to recommended level. (recommended level varies from device to device)

Hope it helps. Feel free to contact us for further queries. We will be happy to assist.

    Thank you.
