Windows 10: Windows 10 Pro: Unable to install updates (Error 0x80070bc9)

Hello there,

For the best part of a year I have been struggling with the exact same issue. I am unable to install these 2 pending updates. Consequently, I am unable to update further and am stuck on an old version of Windows 10 exposed to several threats.

I have already contacted Microsoft support several times and their outcome every time was to "purchase higher support". Prior to this post I have reinstalled Windows many times freshly and I am unable to solve this issue.

The only interferences I can think of is the fact I have changed the default program installation folders in the registry to a seperate drive (P:/ Drive) and my user is saved on a seperate drive (S:/ Drive).

The error I get is as follows:

• Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3176493) - Error 0x80070bc9
• Security Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3172729) - Error 0x80070bc9

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated as I am getting to the ends of what I can handle.

Windows 10 is trying to install updates but I keep getting error 0x80070bc9.

Does anyone know a solution?

I'm trying to install '2017-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for amd64-based Systems (KB4048955)' but when trying to install it, it says '2017-11 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for amd64-based Systems (KB4048955) - Error 0x80070bc9'
in the windows update page in the settings.

Hello, your first change would certainly interfere with an in-place upgrade, for example. Whilst it works for installing programs (I used to do that years ago) it's not necessary or 'standard'.

I would therefore expect an attempt to upgrade to the current build to fail on at least that ground.

I manually choose to install programs to D: (on the same drive as Windows), but that's per installation. I gave up on that registry change because of that problem.

Have a look at the windows update log to see if there's a hint there.

You could try changing the first setting back to default to see if you can get the update to succeed, but that won't help you long term...like now with the anniversary upgrade.

 

So I changed the default directories back to the C: drive and reinstalled the updates then rebooted the PC. Unfortunately the same problem occurs, gettings stuck at 35% then having to "rollback".

 

Sorry to hear that. Please have a look at the setup.etl log and see if that tells you more.

You will see from this you really need an error message/error number, and even then the exact cause may prove more intuitive (=guess) than one might wish.
