Guys, really sorry about this but I really should have mentioned that I have veracrypt installed with the system drive encrypted and my D and E drives whole disk encrypted. I guess this changes things?! Sorry!

    Ut-Oh!

OK, well, that's definitely gotten out of my bailiwick!*sarc

I couldn't suggest anything other than decrypting everything and going from there - but that's only due to my inexperience with that kind of system and vague knowledge regarding the complications that disk encryption can bring.

I've had whole disk encryption for years with WIndows 7 and Windows 8 and I never had a problem until now.

That's a good thing as far as your past experience. I can only hope you'll get good advice here and now in that more complicated context.

I have absolutely no experience in disk encryption.
Does it take long to do that ?
If not , why not decrypt and see if problem solved ?

Win 10 is a new design. It might not behave the same way as Win 7 and Win 8.

I don't want to do that because I need to decrypt 2 TB of data over the network to my home server. It takes ages, and the implication is that if Microsoft release the next update I have to decrypt all over again. It should just work and not expect the user to have to decrypt with each large update.

    Hi all,
Not a big user of encryption, and never used VeraCrypt, but I did see that they have a new BETA version out, and one of the things listed is "Sign binaries using both SHA-1 and SHA-256 to follow new Microsoft recommendations."

Also, just wondering, is it possible in this software to decrypt the OS volume only and not all the data volumes?

The update MUST be run in an administrator account.
That error indicates a standard user account.

    Try this:
    Grab the ISO from TechBench
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/techbench
    uninstall your antivirus
remove all external drives and USB devices, except monitor, mouse and keyboard
if you've moved your Libraries, move them back
uninstall any monitoring software (like Speccy)
    disconnect form the internet
mount the ISO (right-click) and select the setup.exe file
run the upgrade that way, selecting to keep all apps, files and settings.

I just did this to a system yesterday that would not update, and it worked. The only thing I had to do afterwards was connect to the internet and run Windows Update, to get the sound CODEC reinstalled. However, this rig was not using encryption.
