    Windows 10 Random Restarts

    Hello,
I'm having a "restart" problem since I installed Windows 10. My computer just restarts itself with no warning, instant black screen, and boots itself up again. What I've noticed is that it happens usually when I'm watching Youtube, but not every time, even while editing some files. It also happens while I'm in process of entering a video game (champion select - League of Legends).

So here's what I've tried so far:
-Clean install of Windows 10 (followed the instructions from 10forums)
-Ran Memtest86 (Only 1 Pass since, I didn't have time, but no errors had shown up)
-Tried to see if it's a blue screen, with the program BlueScreenView, and it's not.

    PC Specs:
    CPU Intel Core i7 4790 @ 3.60GHz
    RAM 16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 1199MHz (11-13-14-32)
Motherboard Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Z97X-UD3H-CF
GPU 4GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (ASUStek Computer Inc)
    Monitor BenQ XL2720Z (1920x1080@144Hz)
    Storage
    232GB Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB (SSD)
    1863GB Seagate ST2000DM001-1E6164 (SATA)

While I had Windows 8.1, before upgrading to Windows 10, I had no such problem, it didn't happen. I highly doubt it's the drivers because as I said I have a clean install of Windows 10. So my best guess would be the PSU, or the Motherboard, but why does it do that now, why didn't it restart itself on Windows 8.1? Also I've checked the temps on all the system parts, they're all fine. If anyone could help me it would be great, looking forward to what you can suggest me, because I'm out of ideas, except buying a new PSU I guess.

    :)

    Random Windows 10 Restarts

Thanks for replying, i was waiting a few days to see if Dave's suggestion fixed the issue as it was intermittent. After installing the latest version of the ASGT.exe software (their automated updater is terrible) the issue seems to be resolved.

This works for restarts and shutdowns:

"Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option is a disaster. My New Gigabyte P57W would not shut down consistently. I Googled and tried many remedies to no avail and was about to return the new computer for a refund. Then, I remembered that the above mentioned option caused my other computer to restart and not shut down. I solved that problem by unchecking all occurrences of the option. So, I decided unchecked every instance of the option in my new laptop and to my delight the computer now shuts down normally and consistently. How can MS let such a glaring error pass? I hope when they upgrade Windows 10, it does not reinstall this egregious option. Many hours of agravation spent over this crap! This needs to be promulgated to all Windows Users!

Even though you feel it may not be drivers because of doing a clean install but if you are still using the same drivers again it might still be an issue with one or more and possibly the Display Adapter (try an older version driver for this).
A driver might be fine with in one OS and not another, have you updated system drivers since the upgrade and or clean install of Windows 10 ?

Since you did a clean install that can rule out corruption in the operating system.

Does the Device Manager show anything with a Red X, Yellow Exclamation points and or an Other Devices category ?

Hardware can be a cause as said have you removed anything or changed any hardware since Windows 8.1 ? You checked RAM one pass and is o.k. as far as you know and sometimes needs to be done longer Windows 10 is different with memory then 8.1. I know sometimes when RAM is not seated properly it can do this.

PSU can do this to I'd suggest checking the voltage of the PSU although not as accurate you can use software for this, HWInfo or HWMonitor. HWiNFO - Hardware Information, Analysis and Monitoring Tools
    HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID

You said you checked for heat related issues when was this done when idle and what did you use because this can be a cause also ? As it occurred when playing games and videos.

Try posting screen captures from these type of software for us to see.

Check the Event Viewer to see what shows under Custom Views> Administrator Events.
I know trying safe mode to rule out driver issues can be hard since it is random and will not be able to do much there, worth a try or a clean boot.

There are many causes for random restarts, but that power option fixed it for me. This case is closed.

Yes there is many causes that can cause this, glad yours was fixed but you can not mark as solved only the thread starter can let's see if it can help them.

Could you tell me where do I find this option? I googled for it and the only thing I found is that it's located in Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus Controllers > USB Root Hub > Properties > Power Management . If that's it then I've disabled it.

I haven't installed any drivers, or have updated them, so I haven't really used drivers from my mb manufacturer. Windows 10 did that for me. As for the Display Adapter, I will try to downgrade it, as soon as I get another 'restart', if I do get one, because now I just want to see if the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option fixed it.

Speaking of Device Manager, there are no Red Xs, Yellow Exclamation points and or an Other Devices category

I also haven't removed anything or changed any hardware since Windows 8.1 . After I'm done testing the above mentioned 2 solutions, I will definitely do like 4 or 8 passes on the Memtest86. And it's probably not the ram being not seated properly, because if it was, I would have had problems in Windows 8.1 as well.

Here's a screenshot of the program you suggested to me. I have no idea how to make sure everything is alright here. Also I forgot to mention that my PSU is a Chieftec A8 700W, and maybe it's not enough to power a GTX 980 + i7 4790 ?

It happens when mostly idle, I barely use any power, just opening folders, and watching youtube, which doesn't increase any temps. I use Speccy to look at the temperatures, I think it's pretty accurate, but here's a screenshot.

And lastly there is nothing under Custom Views> Administrator Events in Event Viewer.
I will keep you updated, and tell you what fixed it if it did, if not help me pls *Biggrin , as well mark the thread as solved.

Open Devive Manager. It's a long task. Open almost all items and click on properties. Look for a Power Management tab.
You will have to check USB hubs and many other items to get them all. Don't forget system devices/Intel Management Engine Interface. It may solve your problem. I hope so and let me know. This can help many others too.
IME did not appear under mouse or keyboard as it does on my Windows 7 machines.

I had the same problem with a fresh install on a Samsung 840 Evo. It turned out to a driver problem. Go get the downloads from Samsung's site.

I would still check here to make sure you do have the important system drivers updated to the latest. GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1150 - GA-Z97X-UD3H (rev. 1.0)

"Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option is exactly what it says it is, saves power on USB devices and Network Devices when not in use and when a computer enters sleep mode.I am not sure if this will or will not help compared to the other members issues with it.

You showed me a different area in HWInfo than i wanted, i need to see the Voltages from Power Supply and also temps there to. Although the temps seem fine from Speccy at idle, it likely might not be a heat related.

While this power supply is not a quality PSU it does have enough power for that GTX 980 which requires a 500W minimum PSU and about 38 amps on the +12v rail. Yours shows 54 amps on the 12v rail. Still like to see if voltages are good on it.

This still can be a driver issue try running in safe mode or clean boot for awhile.

Yeah, what driver does an SSD need ? Maybe meant firmware update.

Okay I guess the "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power" option fixed my problem.
Since I disabled it (a week ago) my PC doesn't restart anymore.
Thank you very much, I'm marking this thread as solved.
