I'm not sure how AV's check files, but I would think if signatures are sought at byte level, there is no need for them to change file protection. I'll need to consult with the security devs about that though.

It's just that I remember a while back in one of the other threads someone trying to explain(explanation was good, just understanding was a bit difficult) how 3rd party AV's need to use some kind of work around in Windows that Defender doesn't, because it's built in.

I know that now, didn't realize I could use my WinRAR to install files from an ISO that way. Very neat!! *chuckle

Can use 7-zip to extract a WIM file too...

that is how we setup VHD's

We extract the Install.wim to the VHD (which is the same as Appling the Install.wim with DISM)
No need to run Setup.exe (install.wim is the only file needed)

Boot into PE and you can use 7-zip and extract a New install.wim to Host C:\ partition

Of course after my Patriot's finish kicking some butt, I am going to try what Cliff did so I can run my Malwarebytes Pro from your PE Recovery app. I like that idea a lot!! *Smile

And it can extract ESD's now too. I love that tool. With UltraSearch, 7Zip, and Shawns' Take ownership, I can find, open and manipulate(if it's something easy) just about anything in windows.

PE has (grants) full ownership of all hives and files

You just made me too dangerous for my poor PC. Seriously, some people like to take motors apart, some like to do that with electronics, and I like to do that with Windows. Most file names are logical and one can figure out what they do or are, the opposite of the weird names Linux OS devs give their stuff.

Yes ( in the wrong hands) - PE can be very dangerous to your system..
It requires a little more knowledge and common sense, before making system changes..

When you get some time Cliff, tell me how you got mbam to run from the recovery disk?? I thought I followed the instructions, of copying those two file into the win/sys32 and syswow folders (sfc.dll & sfc_os.dll) but when I tried to run Mbam it gave me some kind of exception error msg. No hurry, but when ya got some time.

@OldMike65 on a 64bit system, you need to also look in SysWOW64 also when it comes to .dll files and copy them too.

Did that too.....but still didn't help ....interesting thou that after moving those 2 files in to the sysWoW64 folder, and trying to run Mbam, then checking the syswow64 folder.....those 2 files seemed to be missing.....so its gotta be me doing something wrong. *Smile
