Windows 10: Windows 10 reinstall locked documents folder with encryption.

Hello. I was most recently running Windows 10 2004 when a per failure combined with write caching on my ssd caused some BCD corruption...i recovered from that by manually rebuilding the BCD via recovery usb stick command line, but when i life into Windows I found heavy errors in much of the network subsystem. To the point the Network section of the settings app would force close... My wifi card would connect via the 3rd party software but no dhcp service nor dns services, and several other system services were failing for a variety of reasons. I decided that rather than wade thru what might be endless corruption and repairing that I'd be better off to just reinstall Windows... Since I didn't have a WinRE on the hard drive I had to do a full new install- couldn't even install to the existing partition, Windows made me delete the 3 volumes on my ssd disk C... Which i did, then created a new one and let setup create the new system and reserve partitions... All fine, installed Windows, all fine, updated to insider 20H2, installed VeraCrypt and when i went to use my keyfile old Windows installation was setup to store docs, photos, videos, and new programs on the 1TB HDD, not the 128GB ssd from the previous installation, i navigated to d:\Admin\Documents\mykeyfile no extension on file and tried to load it into VeraCrypt as my keyfile to be used to decrypt a 200GB encrypted container and mount it as a new drive letter... VeraCrypt informed me it couldn't decrypt the file, access denied, I'm not the user who encrypted it. Two caveats here,


1 I never encrypted anything in Windows or with EFS or Bitlocker. So how and why is it encrypted now??

2 I've tried everything can find to get access back- taking ownership, adjusting permissions, etc etc... Followed the steps of multiple guides- no joy. Nothing changes.


Does ANYONE have any suggestions on how to recover this? Seems it's very likely it's gone forever, short of possibly putting hashcat to work with this rtx2080s on the task of cracking the encryption??


This file is very important to me, as it's the key to many more encrypted contents that i DID legitimately encrypt... Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Encrypting a folder

Hello Bill,

To encrypt a folder in Windows 10 Home, follow these steps:

• Right-click the folder you want to encrypt and click Properties.
• On the General tab, click Advanced.
• Under Compress or Encrypt attributes, click Encrypt contents to secure data.
• Click OK then Apply to save the changes.
