Windows 10: Windows 10 Reinstall Problem

Novice/Amateur here, so be patient, please. Installed a new 500GB SSD in my Dell Inspiron 13 laptop and tried to clone the old drive to the new using the Acronis software from the drive's manufacturer. Needless to say, something went wrong and the clone did not go well at all and I no longer had Windows working on the original HD. Had tried using my Windows 10 System Image drive to set the old HD back, but it would not work. I then tried using my System Recovery USB drive and that would not work. I then downloaded to a USB drive the Windows Media Creation tool to reinstall Windows on the drive and that did work. However, when starting the reinstall of Windows it came up with a screen showing: Which Type of Installation do you want? - Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, etc. and - Custom: Install Windows Only.


The first choice of Upgrade would not allow me to install. The second choice of Custom was then chosen and it defaulted to:


"Drive 0 Partition 5: OS Primary". Not knowing which one to select, I went with the default showing.


Windows installed fine, everything seemed to work. That is until I rebooted the laptop and it came up with a screen showing:


"Choose an operating system - Windows 10 on Volume 5 or - Windows 10".


Selecting the first choice of Windows 10 on Volume 5 gives me Windows operating with no problems. Selecting the second choice of Windows 10 does nothing.


I know I evidently chose the wrong place to install Windows, but I would like to know how I can resolve this without having to make a choice of which system to choose when booting up the laptop. Where should the Windows OS have been installed to rather than the default showing of Drive 0 Partition 5: OS Primary?


Should I format the drive and reinstall again to another location on the drive or what???

[Solved] Windows 10 keeps reinstalling KB3119142

I noticed quite some time ago that KB3119142 (Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Update 4 Redistributable Package) kept reinstalling itself for some reason. At least once daily. Sometimes up to several times a day. I just ignored it. It didn't seem to be doing any harm. And I figured they'd eventually fix it. Well...days turned into weeks, weeks into months, with no end to the problem in sight. It dragged on unsolved for at least the last few months. Literally reinstalling itself hundreds of(at least a hundred, felt like more) times in that period of time.

So I finally googled it a couple days ago. And just got around to fixing it today. Which appears to have worked. And it couldn't have been easier to do. I feel so stupid to have let it intimidate me for so long.*Oops!

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows 10 upgrade problem, no input accepted

I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:

• Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
• Try different keyboard or mouse.
• Restart computer, repeatedly.
• Google for related issues.
• Update Bios, because why not.
• Create boot media and revert to windows 7.

The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.
