Windows 10: Windows 10 reliability patch rolling out to prepare PCs for the feature update

As Windows 10 version 1909 is reaching the end of servicing period next month and the Windows 10 Spring 2021 update is around the corner, some users are seeing reliability update KB4023057 again.

KB4023057 update was first released in 2018 and it has been made available to the April 2018 Update and all older Windows 10 versions. As per the support documents, it adds improvements to Windows Update reliability, and it also attempts to free up space on your computer to make room for important Windows updates.

According to support documentations, Microsoft refreshed the KB4023057 update with additional improvements in the last week of March. The update seems to be rolling out again, according to user reports received by us. However, it’s not clear what additional changes (if any) this update brings with it.

After the patch has been applied on Windows 10 version 1909 or version 20H2, users will notice a new tool called “Microsoft Update Health Tools” in the list of installed programs. In some cases, your device will already have Microsoft Update Health Tools installed and it’ll get updated when you apply KB4023057.

One user told us that the Microsoft Update Health Tools app has been updated to version 2.77.0.0 from 2.75.0.0 after applying KB4023057 via Windows Update.

Microsoft Update Health Tools application is required by KB4023057 to modify network settings, clean Registry keys, repair disabled or corrupted components, free up disk space, and reset the Windows Update database to ensure that your device is compatible with the next feature update.

As we pointed out last month, Windows 10 November 2019 Update is reaching the end of the service period in May. Users are already being pushed to upgrade to a more recent version, such as version 2004 or 20H2. If you’re still using the November 2019 Update, notification for the newer update will be flagged in the taskbar.

Unfortunately, in some cases, mostly due to hardware/software configuration compatibility issues, users might not see the May 2020 Update or October 2020 Update.

If the update is blocked on your device, you can always try a manual upgrade using Media Creation Tool and Update Assistant.

Windows Vista Compatibility, Reliability, and Stability Patch Released

Following the DirectX 9.0C November patch, Microsoft has also released a new update for Windows Vista that improves the compatibility, reliability, and stability of the OS. Download links for Vista 32-bit and Vista 64-bit.


This update includes the following improvements:

• It extends the battery life for mobile devices.
• It improves the stability of portable computers and of desktop computers that use an uninterruptable power supply (UPS).
• It improves the reliability of Windows Vista when you open the menu of a startup application.
• It improves the stability of wireless network services.
• It shortens the startup time of Windows Vista by using a better timing structure.
• It shortens the recovery time after Windows Vista experiences a period of inactivity.
• It shortens the recovery time when you try to exit the Photos screen saver.
• It improves the stability of Windows PowerShell.

This update also resolves the following issues in Windows Vista:

• A compatibility issue that affects some third-party antivirus software applications.
• A reliability issue that occurs when a Windows Vista-based computer uses certain network driver configurations.

Patch KB4505903 won't install, PC just hangs and rolls back.

I've upgraded a friend's PC from Win 7 to Win 10. The initial upgrade was a clean install to Win 10 (build 16xx) as this was the ISO I had. Window Update started doing it's thing, upgrading to build 1803 or 1809 I think, then more patches, then it tried
to upgrade to build 1903. This is when problems started.

I had the PC hangs overnight for a number of times. Restarting and it would recover but rollback to build 180x. After trying lots of suggestions I want to a new ISO download from the MS site and did a clean install... success!

Since then it has updated with July's Malicious Tool, the Windows Defender definition updates, 5 driver updates, and then...

• July 9, 2019—KB4507453 (OS Build 18362.239)
• July 9, 2019-KB4506991 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8 for Windows 10 Version 1903
• Security Update for Adobe Flash Player: June 11, 2019

All successfully, however...

• July 26, 2019—KB4505903 (OS Build 18362.267)

Fails to install at all. The PC hangs overnight on a blank screen. I power down and restart, the patch rolls back and Windows Update shows 'Failed to install on 06/08/2019 - 0x800f0845'.

I've tried DISM and SFC /scannow a number of times. I've done the full clean boot process and tried the patch again. I've also tried resetting Windows updates using the automatic script at http://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2015/12/windows... All
with the same result, it hangs then rolls back.

There is no additional hardware attached to the PC. The only apps installed are Google Chrome and Office 2019.

I can access the CBS log files but they don't make much sense to me... I'm not seeing anything like 'error' in the log.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated please.
