Windows 10: Windows 10 reset deleted my files and half of external HD backup gone

Hi everyone!

I had to reset Windows 10 on my Dell Inspirion 5537 15R. It reset back to windows 8.01 after many hours. I realised I couldn't see any of my files even thought I had selected the option to preserve personal files + pics + other folders. I tried to use Dell backup and Recovery but that didn't help. I then thought it was due to wrong version of Windows as Dell had prompted an upgrade. So I upgraded again to Windows 10 (which too about 36 hours. In fact it work eventually because I closed the initial download and started again, selecting option to download MediaCreationTool1809 to PC rather than run online directly).

After I upgraded again to Windows 10 I still couldn't see my files. I read several posts on MS Community about Windows 10 issues. I tried many of the suggestions including checking Windows.OLD folder but still couldn't see my files. Dell Recovery also couldn't see my files after it also upgraded to the Widows 10 version. At this point I decided to do File History restore from my external hard disk. I was shocked to find that I could only see some of the files. All the files I could see had (2018_08_20 18_04_09 UTC) added to their names. Some folders were gone and other folders though visible were completely empty. I called Microsoft Tech Support and enabled remote log in but I got cut off after a few minutes. Tried few times again but got cut off again each time.

Please Help! HELP!! HELLLLP!!! I've lost about 2 weeks because of this and I am so stressed up I cant sleep much. Any help / new tips much appreciated.

Backup on external HD

I have several external HD units for backup.

All units turn on was accessible in computer and ready for backup via SyncToy.

In Win 10 the external HD sowed op the first two days. Then disappeared one by one.

All discs had its own drive letter.

Now only one external HD is accessible.

Wil that HD disappear too.

 

External HD Connection Problem

I have attached an external HD to my computer running Windows 10 and it will not show up in my drive list. The properties shows it as Seagate.ink - what is an ink file and any suggestions as to how I can get it to work?

To isolate the issue further regarding with external hard drive, kindly tell us more information on the following:

• Are you able to connect the external drive into another Windows 10 PC?
• Are you experiencing the same thing happen when you connect and backup file into other external drive?
