How do you prevent your Windows 10 machine from restarting for updates when running software to train machine learning algorithms that may take a few days?

I’m using machine learning for my masters thesis and it takes several days to train my models. Windows 10 has caused me to lose my work three times now because it chooses to restart for updates in the middle of training. This is not something that "save frequent/make back ups" type of advice will fix.

I have the Pro version and have tried numerous things, guides, and recommendations to prevent it from happening but nothing works. Windows seems to ignore whatever I tell it to do. Switching to Windows LTSC or Linux isn’t an option with this machine and I have to leave it connected to the internet since it’s my only/main computer. The machines on the campus lab don't have graphics cards so training would take orders of magnitude longer.

I wish there was a way to block Windows 10 from connecting to the Update server at my router. Or perhaps some code that would make the computer think I am using it and post-pone the update.

I 100% get the importance of keeping stuff up to date but I need to get this project done. I’m about to lose my mind over this especially after I had a forced update in the middle of a final exam that was online a few years ago. It caused me to fail the course.

  3. Unable to Project on Windows 10

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

    1. Have you recently made any changes on the device prior to this issue?
    2. What is the make and model number of the computer?
    3. What is the error message you have received while trying to project?
I suggest you to follow the methods below and check if it helps:

    Method 1:
    Run the Hardware Troubleshooter

Hardware troubleshooter is an inbuilt tool which finds and fixes the common issues with connected
Hardware devices. Perform these steps to run this tool and check if that helps:

    1. Click on Start, type in Troubleshoot.
    2. Click on “Hardware and Devices”.
    3. Click on “Run as Administrator”.
    4. Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Method 2: Update the Display driver

I suggest you to try updating the Display Adapter drivers check if it works for you.

Follow the steps to update the Display driver:

    1. Press Windows Key + X key and click Device Manager.
    2. Expand ‘Display Adapters’.
    3. Right-click on the Display Adapter listed and click on ‘Update Driver Software’.
    4. Select the option to automatically search for the updated driver software.
    5. Restart the computer after its updated and verify.

Also try to access the computer manufacturer's website and download the latest display drivers for your computer and install the same.

    Paint 3D Projects not Appearing

    Hi,

The location that you've provided is the default file storage for Paint 3D. For us to provide the best resolution possible, we'll be needing additional information:

    • Have you tried browsing on the default file storage and open the project files in Open menu? If yes, what happens when opening the project files?
    • What do you mean about project.json does not point to any of the projects?

Meanwhile, we suggest that you run the Windows apps troubleshooter as an initial troubleshooting step and check if the project files are visible in the Open menu. You can also try browsing the project files in the Open menu after running the troubleshooter.
For your reference, check this article on how to run the troubleshooter for Windows apps.

We'll be waiting to your reply.
