I have to go into boot mode and then choose UEFI option in order for Windows 10 to start.
I've tried changing the setting but I'm obviously missing something. Can some one suggest a fix?

The Boot Mode is set to Legacy: Secure Boot

    :)

Try disabling Secure Boot. Also, this is a dumb question, but is Windows actually installed? The post could be interpreted as trying to initiate the disc in UEFI mode.

  5. Windows 10 is installed. I am able to get to the desk top and everything else seem to run fine but I shouldn't have to f12 and select where to boot from

I'll try to disabling the secure boot, but i tried a few things when i first got the laptop.
I'm sure its a simple setting that need to be adjusted

That first photo is the screen that comes up if i don't press f12
the second and third are in secure boot mode

Oh, so have to open the Boot Menu and manually select the HDD that the OS is installed on, correct? In r BIOS, make sure that the HDD is the first in the boot order and that the HDD with the OS is the boot (primary) (known as "master" HDD on IDE systems) HDD.

  7. If UEFI mode was enabled when you installed Windows, you'll need to boot using UEFI mode not legacy. What are your options under "Change Boot Mode Settings"?

    Hi there

Note that UEFI and SECURE BOOT are not BOTH obligatory.

SECURE BOOT IMO is a mega pain and as soon as possible GET RID OF IT. You can Disable it and enable Legacy boot. You don't have to disable UEFI to get rid of secure boot.

Note though if you need to boot into UEFI mode the boot drive must be GPT formatted. For "BIOS" type boot you need to format the HDD in "The old way" i.e non GPT and reset the MBR.

I suspect your W10 boot problem is a combination of wrong BIOS option and Boot HDD format.

You can use things like GPARTED to boot a stand alone partitioner to mess around and format your HDD.

    Cheers

  9. Just to be clear. This is right out of the box with only Win10 installed on it. it it did this from the very first time i turned it one

The "Change Boot Mode Setting" takes me to this:
Windows 10 Right out of the box Won't boot [IMG]

So I don't see a way to make that change

    Hi there

Did you also check if your HDD is GPT formatted or MBR (the BOOT HDD).

Your Windows Boot menu (Not the BIOS Menu) says Boot in Legacy mode --- then you need an MBR formatted HDD. If you try and Boot with GPT HDD -- FAIL.

Easy way to check -- download any Linux live distro and put on USB drive -- then boot it. You don't have to know ANYTHING about Linux - simply use as bootable test. The Linux boot will pick UEFI or MBR depending on the Bios setting it sees. Nothing will be written from the USB to your HDD. Doon't even complete the boot - it's just a tool to check your BIOS boot mode.

    Cheers

    1. Entered BIOS, found hard drive priority setting.
    2. Change setting for primary HDD.
Windows 10 Right out of the box Won't boot [IMG]

    3. Change to the HDD Windows is installed on.
    4. Go to Boot order settings and select first boot device setting.
    5. Select UEFI and the name of the HDD that selected in step 3.
    6. Save and exit.

The boot order determines which boot device starts up first, for example, if DVD drive was the first boot device, it would boot to DVD drive first.

Hard drive priority determines which HDD will start by default if the HDD is set to first boot device (if there are multiple HDDs).

  12. ok I just changed that setting to "UEFI Boot Mode, Secure Boot On" and it does take me to the log in page so it looks like that was the setting i needed to change

    Thanks every one

    Nevermind. Glad solved it.

I'm such an idiot. I should've realized that legacy mode won't work correctly when combined with a UEFI installation. Sorry for wasting r time.
