Windows 10: Windows 10: Screen frequently freezing, no recovery.

For a bit now, my laptop screen been freezing randomly. Occasionally it's when I'm switching programs, and loading one up quickly after another. Sometimes I'm switching tabs, sometimes I'm just sitting and working and it'll happen. Once this occurs, I must perform a hard reboot in order to regain control.


At first, I suspected this was a GPU crash, because much of what I do is fairly graphically intensive (Think 3DS Max and Substance Painter while Unity3D runs in the background. Yes, I like to multitask.), but when I looked in the Windows Event Viewer, at the time of the freezing, there are several entries under Applications that have the event name StoreAgentScanForUpdatesFailure0, and WindowsUpdateFailure3, at the time of the freeze. Under System, there are events at roughly the same time saying "Unable to start a DCOM server" for several features of Windows 10 that I manually disabled.


These system errors appear to concern the starting of Cortana and Dropbox, which I fought tooth-and-nail to disable or remove. I have no use for either of those things.


I did notice several entries in between the time of freezing and me restarting the computer (fairly irrelevant things), so apparently things are happening in the background, somehow, which confuses me more.


My specs:

Windows 10 Home x64

Dell Inspiron 15 5576

Motherboard listed as "Base Board"

AMD FX-9830P Radeon R7

Radeon R7 / Radeon RX 560 "Switchable Graphics"

12GB Ram


While I doubt my hardware is an issue, I'm sure there are known problems, given my experience with AMD GPUs. I'd honestly prefer a response that didn't look like it was copied and pasted out of a handbook.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Friends computer freezing at windows loading screen

Ok my friend is having problems with his computer right now. Basically it crashed on the windows loading screen. This is what he told me on MSN.

Now i'm not too sure what the problem is. I suggested doing a repair install with the xp disk (i'll be giving him that tomorrow) but in the mean time do any of you have any ideas?
