    Windows 10 Second Hard Drive Disconnects on Restart


    I recently purchased a refurbished Dell Optiplex computer with an SSD and a "spinning" hard drive.

    OS is Windows 10 Pro 1909 build 18363.900, patched current as of today

    Drive C: - OS is on the SSD along with the swap file.
    Drive E: - Data files are on the secondary drive.

    If I do a Restart of the PC, it comes up with only drive C:

    If I do a Shutdown and then power the machine back on, both drives C: and E: are present.


    When drive E: is not shown, it is missing from Disk Management and it is marked "Hidden" in Device Manager.


    I'm not seeing anything which appears relevant in the Windows event logs.

    When this was first observed, I returned the unit and it was replaced with a completely different machine.

    The machine passes all built in hardware tests.

    Windows is set never to sleep

    As far as I am able to tell the "loss" of the drive only happens with a restart.


    Thoughts and suggestion appreciated.

    Have a similiar situation using a DiamondMax Plus 8, 20GB Mfg Date 4/15/03. Drive used as a second system drive. Drive is recognized in boot menu but not in drive list. Drive is always connected. Computer started locking up for several seconds at a time. Chkdsk on drives and couldn't find that drive. Removed drive from bay to make sure connections were ok and heard the beeping. Shutdown and restart and never got to windows screen. Restarted several times then saw drive in boot menu and Windows loaded but Maxtor not in drive menu. When recognized in boot menu, computer will start but beeps and is not found.

    Tried kicking it real hard but no improvement. Any suggestions?

    Wondering about a second hard drive and installing Vista on it and also a ..

    iv'e had too many problems to list like that, thats why i suggested disconnecting the original drive(s) and using the BIOS to choose what drive to boot from.
