Windows 10: windows 10 set up is stuck at getting updates

hello friends! i'm trying to upgrade to windows 10, i was trying to hold on as long as i could to windows 8.1. i started the download process, but the windows 10 set up is stuck at getting updates "this could take a few minutes 46%..." has been more than 3 hours. that seems pretty abnormal. i'm not sure what to do, or how to proceed. i'm not sure how to find it again if i do manage to get it to close down through the task master. help!thank you!

Windows Update Stuck

Updating my laptop which I haven't used for 6 months.
I go to Settings, Update and Security, and there are a list of 10 updates, 2 of which say pending install, the others say pending download. Left laptop on overnight and still saying the same this morning.
Ran Windows Troubleshooting Updates twice, both times found no problem.
Have good Wi-Fi signal. Have re-booted several times. Now stuck. Can you please suggest how I get round this please.

 

Get Windows 10 now, no line, Force the update

If your tired of waiting like I was on a few machines, here is the simple way to get Windows 10 Update to forcibly start ahead of waiting in the line.

1: Go to Windows Update, change the settings by clicking both check boxes under Microsoft Update and Recommended Updates.

2: Then Change the Important Updates Area to say "Install updates Automatically" on the drop down menu.

3: Next open up CMD by right clicking on it and saying "Run as Administrator" (If you do not know where CMD is just click the start search area and type CMD)

4: Once CMD is opened, type this command (But do not hit enter yet) wuauclt.exe /updatenow

5: Next go back to the Windows update area and click "Check for Updates"

6: Now go back to the CMD line and hit enter

You should now be downloading Windows 10.

It worked on every machine I have done this method for, you just have to have all the settings exactly what I listed and it works fine (Some people were not changing the Important Updates area drop down to say "Install Updates Automatically" which I found is required).

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.
