  1. Windows 10 shutdown problem

    Hi everyone,
    Windows 10 shutdown problem [IMG]

I can't pinpoint exactly when I first noticed it, but it's VERY recent. I'm thinking just after the KB3140768 cumulative update. My system will not shut down. It proceeds to, then reboots. I've Googled this pretty extensively, and none of the remedies seem to work. All signs point (at least to me) that this is something Microsoft screwed up with their update. My system was working flawless like a week ago. I see no probs in device manager, and all drivers are up to date, as much as they can be, for a Z77 system.

Greatly appreciate any insight into this problem. Thank you.

    System Specs:

ASUS Maximus V Gene (Z77) mobo
    i7 3770k @4.6Ghz (watercooled)
    EVGA GTX 980ti
    Samsung 850 Pro 256Gb x2 raid 0
    WD Black 4tb storage x2
    Corsair 860i PSU
    16Gb Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133mhz
    Windows 10 Pro 64Bit v1511 Build 10586.164
    Fractal Define Mini case

    :)

  2. Windows 10 can't shutdown because of task host manager

I have upgraded my Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 recently. But, there's a problem occurred which is the shutdown problem. When I want to shutdown the laptop, in the shutdown page will prompt me that the task host manager is running. It will go back to the Desktop
after few minutes ago or won't shutdown unless I click the "Shutdown Anyway".

Will this bring a big problem to my computer and is there any solution that could solve this?

    Windows 10 shutdown problem

If you think that the update is the problem, then remove it. If Microsoft has a bad update, they will remove it from machines. Very rarely does a bad update slip out of the servers and stay on machines forever. It all depends on what else you have going on in background processes, that can hang for shutdown.

  5. I will try the update removal idea, thank you. It doesn't hang on shutdown though. It immediately shuts down, but just a few seconds after the system appears to be off, it proceeds to reboot.

  6. Well that didn't work.

No change after latest update removal. Upon Googling, this appears to be a pretty common problem, with numerous YouTube videos on it. I've tried those remedies to no avail. I did read one user's post indicating his Realtek drivers were causing the problem. I suppose that will be the next thing I will look into.

Do not go by youtube videos or websearchs. There is plenty of info on this site to help you. You need to find out what background process is causing it to not shut down. Some assume that it can be a driver, but that is not always the case.

Why, don't you believe everything you read on the internet?
    Windows 10 shutdown problem [IMG]

I keep a lean system to begin with, always keep a close eye on what's running in the background. My first suspicion was Sandboxie, so I killed that. No change. I then went in and killed everything non-system related, still no change. I then booted into safemode, and tried shutting down from there. Again it reboots instead of powering off.

This has to be some kind of problem with Windows.

Do you have any restore points or disk images to restore?
This would help you to potentially get back to a working situation.

Have any drivers been updated (by Windows) recently? That happens - usually- in the background. You can check dates in the Events tab of driver properties, or in Windows update history.

You can try a clean boot, and see if that makes any difference.

    If not, Safe Mode.

Try to establish a scenario where you don't have this issue.

  10. Thank you for replying. I thought that too, perhaps a driver update. Only driver that was updated was Nvidia. I did do a clean uninstall, and reverted back to previous version. No help there either. Unfortunately my main backup drive died, and I only have a system image that's a week old. For all I know, that system image has the prob on it too. I may try Spinrite on my dead backup drive. Spinrite has performed miracles before.

DaveImagery this has nothing to do with how clean your system is. Never stated that it was infected. A background process can hang up and stop the system from shutting down, so you are going to have to figure out what is causing it, by troubleshooting.

  12. I think you may have misunderstood me. By clean system, I meant I have very little in terms of background processes, I run all my systems that way, new and old. Which would further indicate this is a Windows related problem. Yes, further troubleshooting is required. Been doing it all morning actually. *Smile

    Windows 10 shutdown problem

I never misunderstood anything. A clean system means that it is free of malware, not by your definition.

Once again, a background process is hanging up the system, when it goes into shutdown. It could be a task, it could be something that is running that you thought that you closed, but there is a cosing problem.

You are going to have to go through and diagnose to find out what the exact process is that is causing this. None of us have any way to tell you, because not every system with this kind of problem, is going to be the same.

  14. Yes thank you for pointing out the obvious. Attempting to shut down via safemode, yields the same results. So it's most likely a system related process, or setting somewhere. Yes I'm very aware this requires further diagnosing. Your insight is invaluable.

Hi, limits the possibilities that it's happening in Safe Mode, but note that sometimes there may still be some drivers or services running related to more specialised installed programs, despite it being Safe Mode.

Not that that's necessarily what's responsible.
