Windows 10: Windows 10 shuts down, but PC won't

• OS: Windows 10 Home (w/creator's update)
• Asrock Z270 Fatality Gaming K6 (UEFI bios ver: 2.00)
• i5-7600K (not OC'd)
• Corsair Vengeance 16 GB DDR4 3000 (2x8)
• EVGA GTX 970 SC

Built this rig a few weeks ago. Everything is working fine, except for this odd power issue. When I shutdown the PC, Windows will shutdown, the monitor goes black and loses signal as it should ... but the PC itself stays fully powered, fans running, power light on solid, and all mobo LED's lit. It does not appear to be in any kind of sleep or hibernation mode, keystrokes nor mouse will wake it.At this point I can press & hold the power button to fully shut it off. It will start up perfectly fine every time. This also happens when I put the PC into Sleep mode. I've gone over power settings both in the BIOS and in Windows. Everything seems to be normal. I've tried unplugging all USB devices (except keyboard), no luck.

When it does this, all I can do is press & hold the power button to shut it off fully. Nothing will wake it. It's as if the PC is off in every way except power. Even the reset button is ignored.

I should mention this problem is somewhat intermittent. Occasionally shutdown and sleep will work, but fails 80 to 90% of the time.

Windows 10 Creative Uodate won't restart or shut down.

I have a PC with Windows 10 64bit. Spec i5 2300 20Gb RAM GTX970

Windows 10 today has automatically updated to the creative update. Installation gone good but now PC won't restart or shut down. When I click restart or shut down PC stay stuck to the restarting now/shutting down page

how ow can I fix it? And if I cannot fix it, can I come back to previous version?

I have the exact same issue! Upgraded to Windows 10 and at first everything was smooth. Yesterday some updates were installed and now the system won't remain shut down.

It shuts down, even the lights on the PC case are off, then a few seconds later it starts again...

As a test, make sure that Fast Startup is turned off to see if that may help. Sometimes Fast Startup may cause issues with shutdown.

I turned off FastBoot, and so far so good. I tried 2 shutdowns and 2 sleep modes, and all 4 were successful. I've had 5 or so consecutive successes before, so it's not for sure this is the fix, but it is promising. My last 10 or 12 shutdowns before this change were all failures.

Great news so far. Please let me know if it happens again, and we'll troubleshoot from there.

Just to note, sometimes this may get set back to default turned on after a new cumulative or security update via Windows Update.

 

After 2 or 3 more successes yesterday, I had a failure last night - i was going to bed so I set it to sleep mode, and it failed. But I did get a new clue, perhaps. Upon the PC attempting to Sleep, windows went down as it should, then the same thing... power stays on, fans on, etc. Except this time my keyboard stayed on.

I have an 11 year old Logitech G15 keyboard. Here is a picture

It has an LED screen and backlit keys. This time, when the PC went to its "sleep" - the keyboard stayed on, and not only that but the lights on the keys were flashing wildly, as if with an electrical problem, and the LED screen did too. Even stranger was when when I did the forced shutdown, the power on the PC is now off - no fans, lights, etc, but the keyboard stayed on anyway. I recall having seen this in one of the previous failures.

In my original post I was wrong. I stated I'd removed all the USB devices, i did not remove the keyboard because I figured I'd need it for input. so it is the one constant in this.

Another thing is that this motherboard has four 3.0 ports on the back, and two 3.1 ports. One of the 3.0 ports is what they call the "Fatality Mouse Port" - some gimmicky thing Asrock came up with. Well that is the port the keyboard was plugged in to. while it is listed as a 3.0 port, i wonder if there's something different about it. I have moved the keyboard to a normal 3.0 port. and will continue to test.

I'm wondering if this 11 year old keyboard is a) faulty, b) not liking 3.0 ports, or c) shouldn't have been plugged into "Fatality" mouse port. (before this new build, it had never been on anything but 2.0 ports)

 

Do you have another keyboard to use for testing with?

If not, then you might test the keyboard plugged into a different USB port to rule that out.

 

I do have another one, yes. I'm first just moving the main kb to a different port, if that fails, I'll remove the main kb entirely and use the backup.

update: this problem persists. i have ruled out the keyboard because it fails even with it unplugged.

Still having to press & hold the power button on the case to fully shutdown. The problem is still intermittent, though lately it seems like I have more successes than failures.

 

I'm starting to think it may be a hung app causing shutdown to do this.

If you like as a test, create a Shutdown shortcut using the command below, and use it to shut down for a while to see if you still have this issue. The command performs an immediate forced shutdown.

*Arrow shutdown /s /f /t 0

 

Thanks Brink, I will try that. But wouldn't a hung app keep Windows sort of awake, and the monitor on?

With my situation, Windows appears to fully shutdown, and the monitor loses signal and goes into standby. just the power from the PSU continues to feed the mobo, fans, and LED's.

To me, it feels like a hardware issue, but I could be wrong and i'll definitely try it.

 

In addition, you might also check to make sure that you have all the latest drivers installed for your motherboard and devices if it is some hardware or driver issue causing it.

 

ziffel, you are not alone experiencing this type of problem.

I recently started having a Dell start waking itself up from a Sleep and a Hibernate state, when they were user instigated.
On a 'Sleep after 5 minutes' the pc will, after a few minutes, wake itself.
Even on a Shutdown, the pc turns itself on. *Mad

This wackiness started later in the day after switching out the HD for a SSD.
Still troubleshooting this one.
