Windows 10: Windows 10 - Sound and user profile switching

Since upgrading to the latest Windows 10 build (not insider build), I've been having an issue where Windows doesn't want to play sound until the sound card was deleted from device manager and then reinstalled. Strangely though, it normally seems to be specific to one user account, usually my mothers - more than once I've switched back and forth between the two accounts, getting sound on one account but not the other.

Today it was my account that had no sound though, with her signed on in the background. As soon as I signed her off, I had sound again, which makes me think that this is the problem - if there are two accounts signed in, the first will "lock" the sound card.

Any suggestions on how to fix this? Other than the obvious one of not having multiple users logged on at once!

Before we assist further, I would like to ask you a few questions:

• How many user profiles are managed on the computer?
• Are you facing the above issue on a personal computer or a shared computer?
• Have you ever converted the current user account to Microsoft account?

I suggest you to take backup of all the data saved in the system on an external drive due to the behavior exhibited by the computer.



For observation purpose, I suggest you to create another user account and check if similar issue persists after one week or more. Refer to
Set up accounts article to create a new user account on the computer.



The corrupted user profile does not function normally such as not launching
Start menu, Cortana, Search bar, Store and other
Windows applications. In such cases creating a new profile and checking for the same will help in identifying if the is specific to corrupted user profile or the OS.

This issue might be due to the User profile Services, please follow the below and check.

I suggest you to Check the status of User profile services.

Steps:

• Press Windows + R to open Run command, type
  Services.msc and press Enter.
• Search for User Profile Service, right click on it and
  start the service.
• Also, set the Startup type to
  Automatic.
• Now check if you are able to log-in.

Cant switch users in Windows 10

  Did you make any changes to the computer prior to this issue?
  

I suggest you to follow the below steps to Switch users.

• 
  Press Ctrl + Alt + Del key altogether.
  
• 
  Click on Switch User.
  
• 
  Select the user with which you want to login.
  

If computer starts up with a user other than the one you want, login to that user account and switch user to the account that you need and check.
