Windows 10 spell checker does not work on anything, need help

Hi, I just joined the forum, so excuse me if this is in the wrong section. I've looked for an answer by googling but could not find the solution either.

My problem is that since I obtained Windows 10 about two months ago, spell checker has not worked. I went to settings/devices/typing/ and have turned on both the highlight and autocorrect (they were on already but just to make sure), but no yellow highlight ever comes on, not when I'm on firefox, chrome, or when I'm typing on Wordpad, which I often do.

I don't know what the problem is. Appreciate your reply.

    :)

  2. Spell Checker in Internet Explorer 11

Is there no Spell checker on the Internet Explorer browser? I have looked all the usual places to turn it on and I can not find it anywhere. HELP please I need my spell check since Speckie Spell Checker doesn't have an up graded version for the latest
newest browser in Window 10 and Speckie was my spell checker of choice. I texted asking if they were going to upgrade Spell Checkie and was advised to use the on board spell check. I would if I could only find where or how to turn it on.. Thanks for any help
    you can give..

P.S Spell check does seem to be working here. I guess it is just like on Facebook and a couple other apps where as I can write text out that it doesn't work at all.. I still can not find a setting to turn it on or off.

    Welcome to TenForums, Reww.

I went to Settings/Devices/Typing and that thing just doesn't seem complete to me. There's no way to even tell it that when I type yuo, that it should replace it with you. Or if I type teh, it should be replaced with the.

Do you have an Office program, such as Microsoft Office, Libre Office, etc.? When I misspell a word, it has a red squiggly line underneath it. Since I have MS Office 365 ProPlus, I had always thought the dictionary was activated from it, not from Windows.

  6. For what irt is worth (and it may not be much) i did locate a vbs script that I have not yet tested. Supposedly it will work across all applications and has a way to add more corrections to it. It works like a custom dictionary and wont help much if the 'fix' isn't in it (at least from what i could tell).
one of the MOST annoying issues (to me anyway) is that nothing i can find will autocorrect the improper use of the lowercase letter i.
(There are plenty of them in this post but none are marked as misspelled.)
I do this all the time and Word and Outlook both have it in the built in dictionaries rto correct. But it never works. None of the Forum software even offers a correction, ANd a fe others like "better" Try spelling that with 1 t or any mispelling you like and "better" is never offered as the correct option.
I have always wondrd as much about the weird things that spellcheck DOES do as much as the time it cant be used at all.
TinySpell is the most well known alternative and while it works fairly well even in Notepad, it is not quite as good as spellcheck in Word which can be set to autocrrect as you type.
If I had my wishes every possible correction would be done automaticallyand highlighted (for the person typing) to view. If the correction was right, do nothing. If wrong, fix it. By fixing it, the program would learn not to autocorrect that way next time. And the user woudl have the advantage of not having to go to each redlined word since most are typos anyway. We need a little "AI" for spellcheck apps. *Smile

I hit "Reply with Quote" just to see how many spelling errors are in your post (not to try to correct you), but in the interest of spell check . . . When I type beter, I get the red squiggly line, so spell check works for that here in the forums. Also, your handle is marked as misspelled. So is autocorrect, which should be auto correct or auto-correct.

I can't get i to show as a misspelling, no matter whether it's in context or not. However, if I type i'm, I get an error! Go figure. However, every spelling error I spotted in your quoted post (except for i) shows up with the red squiggly line beneath it.

There's no way that any one speel cheeck can ever catch all the errors within our writing. Not even Word and it's about the best there is. The main reason is that although the spell checker is pretty good at spelling, it isn't as good as it should be with context; thus, if I use then when I should use than, it's spelled correctly but you gotta look at the context.

The spell checker in Edge is really the best I've seen so far. It has a nice autocorrect feature.

    Hi questorfla!

Basic typing and handwriting are set in the settings/Time & language/Region & Lang., then select language and click Options. If basic typing wasn't installed yet it will be. Then you set them, like you already did.
But!! This are only active in Windows modern apps like Onenote, mail etc.

No spell checking in Notepad, Wordpad etc.

This are just my observations, not some MS knowledge, so I may be wrong *Smile.

@BunnyJ I find the one in Chrome better, because it spell checks in both English and German for me.
For example when I PM @Cluster Head (Frank) I sometimes write to him in German, as that is his mother tongue, and easier on both of us, Chrome corrects the German too, where as, other browsers, mark it as misspelled English.

In your case that would be true. But for me I think that the Edge has a far better spell checker than Chrome.

If I'm only using english, it works very well.
It would be nice, if all browsers had a user dictionary to add words to(optional of course, or available through an add-on).

True.. but you still can add them as you go along with each correction. But, having the ability to add bulk words
    would be great, IMO.

It is done automatically, more or less, when you add a new language: sometimes, you have to click on language (Options) to add typing an handwriting).
