    Windows 10 spell checking checks British English


    Hi,

    The default Windows 10 spell checker i.e. the one in browser test inputs such as this uses British English for spell checking

    Colour = correct, Color = Incorrect etc.


    My Wndows Display Language is set to English United States and my first proffered language is also English United States though it was previously English Israel - I restarted after changing


    What am I missing? How do I fix this?

    6230i can't spell British English words ending "-ize"

    ize is only preferred if your country of origin happens to be the USA, (Unable to Spell in America)Windows 10 spell checking checks British English :), as the OED lists each ize entry as an alternate spelling for the US.

    As British European English users, there is no need to have ize listed in the dictionary unless the word is actually required to have this spelling variation.

    It's a popular but untrue urban myth that the "-ize" ending has its origin in US English. Actually it originated in British English, went to the US along with the language, and has been retained there.

    British English has more recently acquired "-ise" endings, but most dictionaries still list both forms. Some authorities (including some publishers) still insist on "-ize". Certainly both are quite valid in British English, and should be recognized as such
    by any decent spell checker.
