  2. No Start button function, except on right click. No Edge visible icon on task bar, but it works when empty space is clicked

    Hello Erin,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I request you to follow the below steps:

    • Open the Task manager. Here’s a tip: Press CTRL+Shift+ESC.
    • Click File > Run New Task
    • Make sure you have a check mark beside “Create this task with administrative privileges”
    • Type CMD
    • Type the following 4 commands at the CMD prompt:

      dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

      sfc /scannow

      powershell

      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers |Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*SystemApps*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
    • Close the CMD window
I hope this helps you. If you have any further query in future, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to help you.

    Thank you.

  3. No Start button function, except on right click. No Edge visible icon on task bar, but it works when empty space is clicked

I have no Start button function, except a text menu on right click. This means no tiles, no Start menu, etc. The Microsoft Edge icon, which I had attached to my task bar, is gone, but when I click on the empty space, I go to my HomePage (which is Startpage).
The overall speed of my computer has dropped by at least 20%. This happened overnight, after a clean shut down using the regular power off switch. I woke up to this. From my reading in various online forums, this is a common bug/problem. Why hasn't Microsoft
fixed this? Please reply using the most basic language possible, as I am a basic/home computer user, not a tech of any kind.

If you mean the list shows but is unresponsive, then same for me.... was working before the Anniversary Update, now search and run work but the others don't.

I tried sfc/scannow and DISM repairs but reported everything ok

Sorry couldn't help myself from saying that *Biggrin

One of my computers is 8 or more years old and running Win 10 and some things either take forever or don't work at all

Windows 10 Start button - No right click option

I had this exact problem after I installed one of the insider builds before the AU update came out. Unfortunately I can't fully remember how it was resolved, and it has only ever happened once. I know for a fact a restart didn't fix it. I think I had to revert to my previous build, and the menu worked again. I then wasn't offered the build which had failed, so I just waited for the next one. Are you running an insider build?

This has also been a problem for me over the last few weeks - left-click on start button works fine but right-click doesn't. Same thing happens with using the keyboard - pressing the Win-key button opens the left-click start menu option, but Win-key plus X does nothing!

I've tried loads of 'so-called' fixes including 'SFC/Scannow' and also downloading 'ShellExView', from Nirsoft, and disabling all non-Microsoft Context Menu handlers, but they all fail to solve the problem! The strange thing is that this is what happens on my desktop PC, whereas on my Laptop, which I updated to Windows 10 at the same time, including the AU version, both right-click on start menu and Win-key plus X both work fine!

This is getting to be exasperating - Help would be much appreciated... thank you

Have you tried c:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX (copy the three folders here) c:\Users\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX (use them to replace the three folders here) Then ctrl+alt+delete task manager right click Windows explorer and select restart.

This happened to me last summer when I first upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10. I finally figured out I had a corrupted user profile and nothing could fix that profile. The only thing that worked was to create a new user profile with a different name. The new profile had a working right click menu. I the moved all my files over to the new profile and deleted the old one.

Windows 10 Start button - No right click option

Many thanks Kryten and jb99 for your replies - much appreciated...

Strangely enough, following my previous post last night, in desperation I searched my hard-drive for 'WinX' (using Agent Ransack). To my surprise the search revealed two folders both named WinX. One was empty but the other contained 3 files named - Group1, Group2 & Group3. I copied these three files and pasted them into the empty WinX folder. Lo and behold, on restarting my machine, the right click on the start menu was up and running again. Amazingly simple considering I'd spent a month seeking a fix!
