  1. Windows 10 Start Menu broken after April 2018 Update

    Problem description:

Ever since the Windows 10 April 2018 update was installed, the Start menu on my work PC had been broken. I click but the Start menu does not appear, and nothing happens except a brief busy ⭕️. I have to launch all apps manually, either by running from a Desktop shortcut, using Win+R or double-clicking a data file with an appropriate association in Windows Explorer. Cortana can find apps, but clicking on the app does not launch (nothing happens). I have recently checked that all updates are current. This failure only started after installing big April’18 update.

    Attempted resolution:

I have attempted the steps described in http://msft.social/LjIDhh Creating a new user does work, and the Start menu in other users is not broken; it works as expected. But given the huge disruption involved in migrating across between users, and the fact that it does not solve the root cause, I'd prefer to get to the origin of the problem. Also followed the suggestions in http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/windows-10/has-your-windows-10-start-menu-stopped-working-here-are-four-ways-to-fix-it-11364000314532 (detailed below) which do not fix the problem either.

    - applied all updates (many times since)

    - reboot (many many times)

    - run “sfc /scannow” (found some minor issues first time, subsequent runs are clean)

    - run “dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth” (no issues found)

    - use PowerShell scripts to reinstall and reregister all windows apps

    - run the Microsoft Start Menu Troubleshooter http://aka.ms/diag_StartMenu which doesn’t help. (And now I can't seem to find the download for this tool anymore??)
    - Other posts that describe related problems mention a registry key issue. The value of Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WpnUserService\Start = 2. Some people suggest changing this to 4 but I don't know what it does and I don't make random registry changes without good reason!

    Additional details:

In EventViewer there are many errors logged against ShellExperienceHost. Apparently every time I click on the Start Menu this error is generated:

Faulting application name: ShellExperienceHost.exe, version: 10.0.17134.1, time stamp: 0x5ace103a
Faulting module name: twinapi.appcore.dll, version: 10.0.17134.137, time stamp: 0xb5d50228
    Exception code: 0xc000027b
    Fault offset: 0x000000000009cad5
    Faulting process ID: 0x1bd4
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d43d9d126ced53
    Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\SystemApps\ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\ShellExperienceHost.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\twinapi.appcore.dll
    Report ID: b0060586-354e-49d2-b3ea-61ff0e95b677
    Faulting package full name: Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_10.0.17134.112_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy
    Faulting package-relative application ID: App

I have extracted a filtered event log showing all such errors, though I can't seem to attach it here. In any case, the exception code and fault offset appear to always be the same. (This consistency means it should be easy to reproduce and fix!)

Let me know if I can provide any further details (such as ETW session etc).

    Thanks -

    :: Gavin

Windows 10 April 2018 Update(SCU) Partially Breaks MKV File Support?

I updated to main computer to the April 2018 Update, AKA Spring Creators Update, and it seems like they've taken a step backward with MKV file support. When I go into the properties of an MKV file on the Fall Creators Update, if I go to the details tab it gives me a bunch of detail about he media file, like resolution, framerate, audio information and bitrate. However, if I go into the same file's properties on the April 2018 Update, almost all of the information is blank, it only gives me a runtime and bitrate.

I really just want to confirm that this isn't just my computer and other's are experiencing the same thing.

Microsoft blocks Windows 10 April Update for Intel SSD 600p Series

Microsoft is blocking some Intel SSDs from installing the April 2018 Update after discovering an incompatibility issue that causes performance and stability issues. In short, the problem was explained by Microsoft as: “When attempting to upgrade to Window 10 April 2018 Update select devices with certain Intel SSDs may enter a UEFI screen reboot or crash repeatedly.” Microsoft says that this issue has no workaround and that those that have attempted to update Windows 10 to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update should revert back to Windows 10 Fall Creators Update version 1709.

Unfortunately, the announcement by Microsoft fails to list what specific Intel SSD models are having issues with the OS update. We contacted Intel and discovered that the Intel SSD 600p Series of client drives that was first introduced to the market in 2016 is the most popular drive that is having issues.
