The system had been running without any problem for a couple of years prior to this. The computer is a custom built desktop system...

    Motherboard: Gigabyte X299 Designare EX

    CPU: Intel Core I9 extreme

    MEM: 64GB

System Drive: Samsung 960 Pro M.2 NVME SSD 2TB
Secondary Drive: Samsung 960 Pro m.2 NVME SSD 2TB standalone second drive
Secondary Drive: 12TB Segate SSD SATA
    Two Nvidia Titan XP

    Sound Blaster AE-5

    OS: Windows 10 Pro

Repeated restarts and power cycling produced the same results. I moved the appropriate hard drive to the top of the boot list in Bios - but that had no effect. I restored a "safe" BIOS profile, but that had no effect either. I then rebooted using my rescue thumb drive and tried the "Startup Repair" option in "Advanced Options". It trundled for a short time saying "Diagnosing your PC" before displaying a screen that said "Startup Repair couldn't repair your PC".

Oddly enough, when I went into CMD using the rescue thumb drive, I was able to get directory listings of the two SSDs - so the contents of the two SSDs *seem* to still be there. I could not, though, get a directory listing of folders whose name contained a space e.g. Program Files it said the file was not found. I could get directory listings for the other folders that I tried on C:. If at all possible, I'd rather not reformat everything and start over again.

    Any suggestions?

    :)

  2. Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device...after reboot?

Hello all. Getting a little frustrated here. A couple of weeks ago we had a user come in on a Monday morning to find that her pc was displaying the classic message "Reboot and select proper boot device...". Tried popping in a windows disk and fixing the MBR, no luck. Ended up reinstalling windows and her few programs back on it. All was good after this. For about a day. She came in the next day to find the same message. So at that point we decided that more than likely the drive was bad even though oddly enough it tested out fine. It was a Corsair 60gb SSD.

Last week we swapped that Corsair with a 64gb Crucial SSD and installed Windows. We then created a backup image of that drive. All was good until Thursday when her power strip that the PC was plugged into got tripped. Start up the computer for find "Reboot and select proper boot device..." message. So, apply the backed up image to the SSD since repairing the MBR didn't work.

Now this morning she comes in and the PC is running fine. Attempts to open Microsoft Word and she gets a pop-up stating there isn't enough disk space. So, she then restarts and upon booting back up gets "Reboot and select proper boot device..."

Any ideas what is causing this? Is it something with the mobo or do I just have horrible luck and replaced the bad SSD with another bad SSD?

Reboot and select proper boot device. Need help.

    Hi,

Windows is now using UEFI firmware so we suggest that you put the priority boot to UEFI Hard Disk, remove any USB peripherals and boot it normally. If ever you still encounter the Reboot and select proper boot device error message we suggest that you do
    the following steps:

    - Access WinRE from a bootable USB, Recovery partition or Windows 10 disc.

    - Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options
    > Startup Repair.

If you still can't boot to Windows, Follow:

    Recovery options in Windows 10.

    Let us know the outcome.

    Best regards,
