Windows 10: Windows 10 still defrags ssd's instead of optimizing!

When I run automatic maintenance from the security & maintenance screen windows 10 defragments my samsung 960 pro M.2 c: drive instead of optimizing it. I thought windows 10 was smart enough to not defragment ssd's under any circumstance? If I have the optimize drives window open while running maintenance manually I can clearly see my ssd going through the 3 passes of defrag & it says the % already defragged!

Have you created any Task schedule on your system to defragment your SSD drive?

If yes then we suggest you to cancel the task from Task scheduler and check if the same issue occurs. This generally happens if you have any task scheduled for SSD drive.

After KB3163018 & 3149135 Automatic Maintenance Defragments SSD instead of Optimizing

After KB3163018 and KB3149135 were installed, I noticed that manually starting Automatic Maintenance that an SSD is defragmented instead of sending only the trim command to the SSD (optimization).

It's easily verified: just manually start Automatic Maintenance with the Defragment & Optimize Drives GUI open.

You will notice in the GUI that Windows defragments the SSD using multiple passes - Pass 1, Pass 2,...

It's a screw-up...

windows 10 calls it that because instead of defragging an SSD, it runs TRIM.
