Windows 10: Windows 10 still locks up when checking for update

I reported this problem in Nov 2016 and it still hasn't been fixed. Ever since I installed Windows 10, my Acer laptop locks up -- cursor freezes, then CPU fan spins in overdrive like it's about to burn up -- so I have to turn off computer to reboot. Couldn't figure out why at first, then after rebooting I would try doing a manual Update, and 100% of the time there was an update for Windows Defender and Windows 10 found, so obviously it's Windows Update that is causing the lockups. This is not unique to my computer. A friend has a Dell desktop PC with Windows 10 and has had the same issue.


Why does Update have to freeze up the computer, and when will this be fixed?

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Microsoft to make Windows 10 updates mandatory

Well, at the moment at least, you can choose to defer upgrades. Under Settings > Windows Updates > Advanced options you need to check the box labeled "Defer upgrades". What does that do? Good question. The answer I've found might illuminate it to a degree.

I hear this only applies to Pro and Enterprise editions. But I can't verify that.

Well just noticed a pretty large one pop up coming in at 914MB, seems it makes some pretty serous updates.
