I have a WD Passport Portable HDD. Had no problems with it. Windows 10 kept putting up a popup when I used it, to scan it for errors. I finally did it. It scanned, said no errors, and now it's totally messed up. It still shows up under "My Computer", but I click it and get a blue spinning wheel where it crashes file explorer. I can't even right click and get into it's properties, crashes or properties never opens. As soon as it's unlocked, the read/write light continuously flashes on the drive. File explorer can't recognize how much storage it has/has used. Just says "local disk" with no capa

Windows 10 suggested scanning my working portable HDD to check for errors, I ran the scan, and now my HDD isn't working.

Just says "local disk" with no capacity bar under it. I tested on a 2nd PC and same results.

Any advice? I'm trying to use chkdsk /f /i /c right now in Command Prompt, but I left it on while sleeping and I'm at 5 percent progress total, not sure if I'm even gonna be able to do the whole thing.

edit: I gave up on chkdsk because it seemed like it would literally take a week or more real-time. I was also able to remove the password for the portable HDD with the HDD utility software, wanted to remove that variable, so I edited that part out of my post.

    Portable HDD full but isn`t..

    Hi Graham,

In most cases, this may already point to a hardware issue. We suggest doing the following to properly isolate this:

    • Connect your portable HDD to a different port.
    • Connect your portable HDD to a different PC.
    • Connect other storage devices.

If you find that other storage devices work properly and your portable HDD still encounters an error with other computers, then this is already a hardware issue and you'll need to get in touch with the device manufacturer for assistance and troubleshooting.

Feel free to post back if you need more help.
