Windows 10: Windows 10/Surface: Boot error 0xc0000098

Users of Windows 10 and/or a Surface model run - possibly after an update installation - into a blue screen in which the error code 0xc0000098 is reported. The device can then no longer boot see image below.





The BlueScreen delivers areference to a damaged BCD data store. In most cases, vitims will have to re-install Windows 10 on the device - or force a factory reset on Surfaces.


However, there is a repair approach to repair the Windows 10 BCD database in a Windows PE environment. The following commands are required in an administrative command prompt:


bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd
bootrec /fixmbr

bcdboot c:\windows /l en-us

I can't guarantee, but maybe it helps.


Side note: I wrote the blog post, after I was contacted from a German doctor, living in Japan, who was victim of this BCD error on his brand new Surface Pro 6. Due to the corona crisis he wasn't able to gain support. But he managed it to recover his Surface with the instructions given within the blog post, without forcing a factory reset. So the chance is high, that it will also work for others.

The the 0xc0000098 error can appear due to a corrupted BCD (Boot Configuration Data) file. This can be due to a change in the hardware. There is also a possibility that Windows files or the hard drive was damaged on some cases. In this case, we suggest to boot
from windows 10 installation disc and kindly follow the steps provided by
