Windows 10: windows 10 System Startup record corruption

The last time I used my desktop pc the system hung during what I think was probably a system update in background. I couldn't get to the task manager to close it down and had to manually power it down. When I rebooted it the System Startup record appears to have been damaged. None of the Windows recovery options will work including the system recovery. I am looking for options that won't destroy my data and backup files on the system.

I'm not sure how to do that. Could you list the steps for a noob?

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Steps Recorder there... but not there


I seemed to have been saved by a link to this fix:
Please use regedit to rename hklm\software\policies\microsoft\windows\AppCompat - changeAppCompat to AppCompat_HOLD . Then try launching PSR again.
Tried it and now Steps Recorder seems to be working as it should.
But to follow up on your suggestion, I'm going to try to find and repair the corrupt files that my sfc scan found... after setting a restore point!
