Ok as you've read all the threads.. then I suggest you try:
    a. randomly replacing the major drivers with the version that last worked, or the last version approved by your manufacturer.
    b. Disabling Fast Startup if enabled.
    c. Use the MS diagnostic tools

@Stevekir: With an SSD, typical time to the lock screen on cold start =12s or so.

  2. I'm running a sfc scan right now. I played with drivers, fastboot is off. Next I will try MS Diagnostic Tools, if nothing works I will turn fastboot on, enjoy my 1 minute boot and 2 minute shutdowns untill I buy an SSD.

"@: With an SSD, typical time to the lock screen on cold start =12s or so."

Mine takes 22 secs. to the desktop appearing. The first 15 secs shows a black screen until a set of 4 small blue windows appears, against the black screen. Then after a few secs (about 2 or 3) a plain coloured screen appears with a "Sign in" box. As I am the Administrator and there is no password (I am a sole user) that disappears immediately and automatically and the desktop appears. I can live with that (my life is not that hectic).

Perhaps my 15 secs to the set of 4 small blue windows is, in my case, the same as your "12 secs to the lock screen".

I ran the trace boot from bootmgr, here are some results I would like you to analyse (PLEASE ZOOM IN IF YOU CAN'T SEE WELL)

What is smss.exe and why is it taking so long? Why are the multiple instances of scvhost.exe?

With fastboot on, shutdown takes 2 minutes, windows boots fast but I get stuck on a black screen and then at the Welcome screen for 30 seconds.

Multiple svchost's are normal. Was hoping someone more expert than I might have an idea.. I'm afraid I can't suggest more.. just pointed you in the right direction.

I actually tried to run a trace on mine, but on restart got a failure message about UEFI boot and was dumped into my BIOS. Had to do a startup repair.

So I'm wondering how you actually got that trace, and whether I did sthg wrong in running it.

Note: forum rules specifically prohibit thread bumping.

  6. In short, you have one of two issues. Either Windows is stalling due to conflicting resources (multiple processes trying to access a file that has been locked by one process for example), a badly written "wait for x" instruction, or accesses to another, non-SSD drive. If your CPU is stalling then we know it's time spent reading and writing.

Check the latter by trying to boot with all other storage physically disconnected. If it boots up fast, use CCleaner or another app to search for more startup items (msconfig startup tab is not a complete list, there are ways to make things start on boot or login that will not show up there).

Oh and @Stevekir The 15 secs to 4blue squares is entirely your motherboard electrically testing your hardware. Windows and/or SSDs cannot improve that time, but going into BIOS/UEFI and disabling RAM Test and USB Enumeration would take that figure down to about 4 secs, plus 2 for every Drive connected, but the name of those settings changes with board. Look for "fast boot" in BIOS.

  7. Apologies for the double post and I ask if a mod can merge if necessary.

I'll explain a little bit on my instruction to OP. SMSS is Windows session manager. It loads and controls your login session. If it's taking long then your startup program is part of your login rather than Window's actual startup. Windows preloads this stuff on some machines.

Svchost is short for Service Host. It holds the services that you change in control panel. Multiple are loaded for security reasons. Essentially there are two for each user (one for admin needing services, one for the rest) and then one for every "non-user account". For example, Windows update and your network devices sometimes create their own user so they cannot he affected by anything you do while they work in the background. If not, you logging out could close them, crashing a background download or update.

Thank you all for your answers, I will just quit trying to find a solution and blame it on the HDD. I will post again if I decide to buy a SSD, have a great day *Smile

There is a difference between a Cold Boot (start by pressing Power Button) and reboot time in Windows.
My Lenovo z710 (no SDD) takes 18s to Boot (cold boot). A Reboot takes between 42s and over 1 Min, sometimes 1min 20s, this is random, seems it takes longer after installing a new Program may be Windows Defender is "working on it".
Before the update (105) it was always under 1min , mostly 52s.
In order to achieve the short Cold Boot time you must have Superfetch enabled and Fast Start-Up enabled, otherwise it will take the same time as a reboot.
By reboot Windows is loading everything new. By Cold Boot Windows is loading from a special file it has been created while shutdown.

You may want to try following:
Delete all XML files located in Windows>Performance>WinSAT>DataStore
Next, open an Elevated Command Prompt and type this:
    Winsat formal -clean

Before running WinSAT you may want also to run the LODCTR /R command.

  10. Superfetch is enabled, fastboot is disabled as it makes my shutdown time 2 minutes. After I did what you said boot times are somewhere from 35-45 seconds without including the BIOS boot time. Another thing I notice is that the laptop spend at least 10 seconds in the welcome screen before loading desktop, It's probably the HDD being slow because otherwise if your z710 can do it, my lenovo y50 should also do it. Thank you for the suggestions, have a great day *Smile

EDIT: Did a couple of more cold boots and now the laptop turns on 30 seconds from the moment the button is pushed, the welcome screen lasts only a second. YOU SIR ARE A WIZARD. Thank you for the idea. I will test it a bit more and mark this as solved.

    OK.
It takes a long time to shut down because Windows is preparing the File for the next Cold Boot.
In my case it takes about 18s (after Screen goes Black) to shut down.
You can not expect a Short (cold) Boot time with Fast Boot disable. There is no "Miracles".

  12. Yes I can tell windows is preparing the boot files but 2 minutes (not exaggerated) is too much don't you think? That's why now I'm happy with a 30 second boot time. If i turned on fastboot it would probably shave down to 25 maybe but it's not worth the trade. Any suggestions?

Windows 10 takes 1 minute to boot

I did not understand what you did to get the 30s now. Would you please explain, as reference for other people that might read this thread?
The only thing I can suggest you is looking in the Start-Up files/Services for things that not need to load and stay resident in memory.
You may also give a try to RAMMap by Mark Russinovich from Sysinternals. Use it one time and reboot.

  14. Fastboot was on until today so I turned it off because I was tired of the long shutdown times and also Deleted all the XML files in Windows>Performance>WinSAT>DataStore and also ran "Winsat formal -clean" in cmd.

2 Min. to shut down is too long.
I can not say from here why.
Too many programs? The "Optimize and Defragment drive" is on working? I have this option turned off since 1st day and for every Drive and every PC I own.
You can find it by choosing in Windows Explorer, Drive C, Properties, Tolls, Optimise. Clicking on this will open another Window where you can enable/disable it . Also you can perform a "Analyse" if you think that would be necessary or useful.
