Windows 10: Windows 10 TH2 Crapping Out At 40%

This was because no matter if you have installed all your drivers and working OK in build 10240, Setup will foolishly try to replace them when upgrading to build 10586 causing problems. Even after a successful upgrade you need to reinstall all your drivers to make sure your computer is working at its best.

 

Good advice, but that route is just plain foolish on Microsoft's part too keep changing older drivers that are working fine under windows 7 and are the latest under it.

 

I am not sure about Windows 8, but in Windows 7 and earlier the drivers were only changed if there was a newer version available on Windows Update. Otherwise the older drivers (even XP drivers) were used.

 

All is well. After the november update, I plugged in the usb cord for the monitor and I got a BSOD. But this time, after a reboot, my pc took its time coming back. The BSOD didn't happen after that. I then tried to see if the monitor webcam would be able to update a driver online. We'll it did and I nearly fainted. I have a usb audio driver, and I don't give a sh*t. It works.

I'm also having this same issue on my ASUS T100TA Transformer Book, I had the same issue yesterday while trying to 'upgrade' to the latest home edition via settings. This morning it's once again stuck again @ 40 % with the ' Installing features and drivers' stuck @ 23 % like other user's in here have reported. Just now I ejected my Micro SD Card..hoping something would happen, so far..NOTHING. To me anyway..this issue will give other valued Microsoft user's a VERY negative feeling towards the company. I'm an active Windows Insider, I'm using the most recent version that was offered to me on the 'Fast Ring' on a daily basis..without any issue's. I would have thought by now Microsoft would have got this upgrading process MUCH more refined before offering to upgrade user's computer's !! I'm still waiting to see if my ASUS machine will actually get upgraded properly or not, the good thing is the upgrade 'circle' that shows the upgrade process % appears to still be active..the 40 % is shown as blue, and the 60 % gray area is still dimming like normal. I really wish any other member's in here that are having the same issue would share if / how they got this corrected.

I think Microsoft dumped this Threshold upgrade us before it was ready for prime time! I have problems with networking and updates on three machines.

My advice is to forget about doing the "upgrade". Use the Media Creation Tool to download the .iso and do a clean install. Be sure to remove any SD cards, external drives, printers, etc.

That's what I am about to do.

This happens because Setup ignores any working drivers and tries to update them all from Windows Update. If it cannot find drivers for any device, it stucks. All you can do is disable some devices from Device Manager, so it will not try to update their drivers and it will finish the upgrade. After the upgrade is complete you can enable them again and find drivers for them. I would leave only hard disk, graphics, monitor, keyboard, mouse and disable the others (including the touch screen, use mouse instead). Also disable your Antivirus and run check disk to fix any disk errors.

 

Guys, I don't know know whether this will help (or gives a clue as to) why the installation sticks at 40% but I removed the micro sd card on my laptop and the install worked. Not sure whether that's a coincidence or not!

 

As said before, this happens because Setup cannot find a driver for a specific device (and foolishly ignores currently installed driver). Disable some devices from Device Manager to avoid that (see my previous post).

 

That is a known problem (any SD card). The installer should handle it but doesn't.

 

What about if someone wants to use an SD card as an Temporary storage for installing Windows on a small SSD? They surely haven't thought of that! I have some SD cards which I frequently use in a card reader instead of a USB Flash drive.

 

I suspect MS will eventually fix this as they seem to be pretty serious about fixing install problems.
