You can create a bootable flash drive for either UEFI or legacy BIOS with Rufus, Alpha. Two of my PCs are UEFI and two are legacy BIOS.

  2. That's why I do it with diskpart, my thumb drives are good for both legacy and UEFI.
    select disk #
    clean
    create partition primary
    format fs=fat32 quick
    active
    assign
    list volume
    exit

Then mount the iso and copy the files to the thumb drive.

I'm going to suggest an amendment to that:
    select disk #
    detail disk
    clean
    etc.

"detail disk" doesn't change anything, but gives a bunch of information about the disk you just selected. The idea is to use that to double-check that the disk you're about to "clean" is the right disk!

Feel free, http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...e-windows.html Option two. Looks like I left out "List disk" then select the one that's your thumb drive. I just clipped and pasted in a hurry. When I sit down and do it myself It's just second nature now. I don't even have to think about it.

Windows installation on a micro SD would be smaller than postage stamp, easy to mail. Only drawback is that you would need an USB adapter but everybody that has smart phones and mobile devices should have one of those anyway. saved me lot's of time and aggravation.

  9. That won't work for any of my systems here. My thumb drive has to be marked active or my PC's won't boot from it. I also have to use Fat 32 file system or I can't install in UEFI on my wife's Acer laptop. My ASUS laptop is fine with NTFS for UEFI though. My desktops are legacy so either format is good for them. I've just got into the habit of doing them all the same way now via diskpart.

I never knew you could do that, Cliff. I've always used Shawn's method and it works great for me.

  12. I think that's one of those YMMV type of deals. Try it and see if it works but don't be surprised if it doesn't. It may depend on how new your motherboard is and how good of a UEFI BIOS you have. Non of my PC's will boot from a thumb drive unless it has an active partition on it. My Wife's Acer is very fussy. If the thumb drive is formatted in NTFS it will not show up in the BIOS boot menu at all.

This trick I originally learned from David Bailey, but, Shawn has it in one of his tutorials, though I forgot which one off-hand. But it's kind of hidden in the middle of a tutorial. Maybe he'll link it.

I use a quick way also. PowerISO. Select tools> Create Bootable USB Drive> and it asks which image to put on it. Browse for preview 10130 (the latest build).iso and then boot with your USB stick.

    cheers
