Windows 10: Windows 10 Truncated username in C:\Windows\Users

In setting up a new PC, Windows 10 has truncated my username in C:\Windows\Users from the correct user name (e.g. absmith) to absmi. Guru Kiran responded to this issue in a previous post, however his suggestions don't really work, or maybe just not in my case. To be clear, I do not need to change my account user name -- that name is correct. I need to change the name in the C:\Users folder.


I have several pieces of software that must be installed in the absmith user folder. They will not install in my current user folder because the name is truncated to absmi, so I am trying to rename the users folder to the correct name. Guru Kiran suggested renaming the user profile in the Registry, however that results in a new profile where everything previously set up is wiped out and I am back to square one, or would be if I let it go that far. Complicating the issue are multiple connection and/or activation errors in Event Log, because many of the strings in the Registry have the correct user name, but even more have the wrong one.


I have been through every iteration of Windows since 3.1, and have never before encountered this problem until Windows 10 (1803).


My question is this: Is there any way at all that I can correct this mis-naming problem without have to go back to square one? I would not call myself a "power user", but I am comfortable editing the Registry and making other kinds of tweaks.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Current active users that are friends

The other reason I suggested this is that users can add characters to their username that are not alphanumeric (e.g. user*). This confuses things somewhat when looking at the list.
