  1. Windows 10 Unbootable After Using Norton Utilities Defrag

Yet another victim of Norton Utilities Here! After running a defrag on my laptop using NU16 and then attempting to restart Win10, all I was getting was the splash screen w/spinning dots and my HDD light on steady. Somehow, the partition was corrupted after the defrag. I tried recovering the HDD using six different recovery apps with no success. Oddly enough, the only way I was able to recover the data on the HDD was to remove it from the laptop and hooking it up as an external drive to an Apple iMac Pro. The iMac was able to read the drive just fine! So, I used the iMac to move all of the files onto another external drive which will be Apple formatted, then using HFSExplorer for Win10 to extract the files from the new external drive onto a new internal HDD after performing a clean install of Win10. This saved me the cost up to $3,000 of sending the crashed drive to a lab for recovery of the data! Here's a recap of the steps I took:
    1. Remove crashed internal drive from computer and install it into an external USB case.

    2. Plug the crashed drive and a new external drive into an Apple iMac.

    3. Transfer the files from the crashed drive onto the new drive.

    4. Install a new internal drive onto the Windows computer and perform a clean install of Windows 10.

    5. Download/Install HFSExplorer onto the Windows computer and use the app to recover the files you want from the new external drive.

    6. Optional When done, if you want to restore the new external drive to Windows format, you can do so using the Disk Management feature. Do this by deleting the Volume shown on the new external drive and then performing a format.

    7. Give the old HDD to the person who lent you the iMac! It is now useless on any Windows PC.

    :)

    Good defrag utility??

I have tried out most of the defraggers listed above and would not any of them on an OS drive. They all interfere with the boot optimisation that MS has implemented and do not adequately replace it (if the option to do so exists).

I recommend using the Windows defragger, prefetch ,superfetch and layout.ini system for your OS drive as they are all interelated and work the best.

For non OS drives, there are a number of approaches, I suggest Ultimate defrag or Optimum defrag do a great job on game drives or storage drives. Mussels thread has the info.

  3. Defrag utility in Windows

defrag utility can't be ran with standard user priviledges, so he is wrong.

you can open defrag utility but to actually defrag a partitioin it requires

    administrator priviledges.

    he is utterly wrong.

    Defrag utility in Windows

    Hello Maverick,

My name is Patricia and I am an Independent Advisor. I am here to help you today.

Defrag utility is a drive tool, not a user one.

Defrag for only one user would have no sense.
