Windows 10 update and now no boot/USB startup/safe mode etc

After an automatic Windows 10 update I turned my stationary PC on, but it got stuck with the first HP log screen (shows besides HP logo "v7.13" and a text "Press ESC key for startup menu"). I tried to turn the PC off/on some times with no luck.
Then I tried to create a Windows media boot USB but the PC does not read from it. I tried to insert an old HP recovery DVD but that was not read either.
I tried to hit ESC on start which opened a screens with some information (Processor type, speed, RAM and BIOS etc. ) but no selections available. Beneath that the text "Press ESC key for startup menu" is also there. If I did the same hitting F9 the same screen appears but now with a text “Boot menu” in the lower right corner. Still no action possible.

It seems to be a serious Windows 10 update fault.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks
    Bob

  2. Windows 10 in hibernation mode

    Hi,

Thank you for your interest in Windows 10.

Firstly, disconnect all the external devices (printers, scanner, USB (universal serial bus) drives, etc...) Except mouse and the keyboard and then boot up.

If issue still persists, I suggest you to boot the computer to Safe Mode a. In Safe Mode computer starts with minimal set of drivers and files.

Refer the article to boot to Safe Mode:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode

Hope this information is helpful. Please do let us know if you need further assistance, we’ll be glad to assist you.

  3. System Thread Exception Not Handled

On 6 March I was installing a cumulative update on my notebook with Windows 10 and during the installation I pulled out my mouse. Maybe this caused some problem and my notebook now displays 'System_Thread_Exception_Not_Handled'.

I have Googled around and have tried to troubleshoot which includes booting into Safe Mode, booting up with Windows 10 installation media etc. All of the above troubleshooting has failed.

The problem seems to be in the startup cycle. Whenever it tries to restart into any mode, the startup fails and it displays 'System_Thread_Exception_Not_Handled'. So I am unable to troubleshoot if the steps require to restart into safe mode, into recovery
    DVD etc.

    Please help.

  4. Windows 10 update and now no boot/USB startup/safe mode etc

Hi Bobln. Welcome to the the TenForums @Bobln

Since you are not getting to Windows I would suggest you go into BIOS (Setup) and load defaults. Not exactly sure where that will be in your BIOS or the exact words. Some have on opening panel, some as you exit or even on panel labelled "Boot". Set your date and time.

Not sure how you created boot media but I would recommend Windows Media Creation tool.

One thing you can do if your BIOS is being really cranky, non responsive, on a desktop is remove the coin size battery on motherboard. This will reset BIOS. For sure then you have to enter BIOS and set date / time. Do it cautiously so as not to inflict more pain. If you can find manual there are usually jumper pins you can short to reset and some boards even come with a switch.

Not sure how old your desktop is but these coin batteries do fail and drop settings. Then your device will display these symptoms by asking you to enter setup menu. If device is four or five years old it wouldn't hurt to insert new. Watch polarity.

    Hi Ken

    Thank you for responding.

I cant get access to BIOS setup and when setting the USB with Windows media creation tool it does not start from there, probably because the start order should be changed, but I cant get to do that (have tried to press a key on power on with USB in). When powering on I can only provoke (from the HP logo screen) a black screen with :

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    “Processor type:….”
    “Processor speed:…”
    “L1/L2/L3 Cache…”
    “Memory size…”
    “Channel1 A…”
    “Channel1 B…”
    “BIOS Revision date v7.13 01/05/2012”

“Press the ESC key for startup Menu”
    “Boot Menu”
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The “Boot men” is only there if I pressed F9 when powering on and if I press F2 it says Diagnostics instead.

So if I remove the CMOs battery and I cant get to BIOS would then…?

At startup I can see the harddisk light two times and the fan starts…and If I insert the USB before power on it lights up at power on a couple of times to…but no action.

  6. As you power on keep pressing ESC, this should get you Setup (BIOS).

If you remove battery it will demand you to go to set up as it will have lost time. If that doesn't happen you may be experiencing a hardware error.

If when you are powering on you hit F9 you will get boot menu. If you already had the USB key inserted and it is not on list then key likely is not right.

Your very first sentence in first post. When you powered on it said hit ESC for setup. I believe you need to enter Setup and at least hit Save (f10 usually exit with a question do you want to save and exit.)

    Hi Ken

I could not get any workable menu by ESC or any other keys, so there was no access to BIOS. But I followed your advice and replaced the BIOS battery (CR2032 battery) and started the PC. It showed a message like "BIOS updated" and continued with startup but had a period with "update...do not turn off" and ended with a successful startup.

Thank you for taken the time to support me.

It is extremely valuable and appreciated that people like you take the time and effort to share your knowledge and experience with others in trouble.

  8. Windows 10 update and now no boot/USB startup/safe mode etc

You're welcome Bob. Glad things worked out.

Please take an opportunity to look into Macrium Reflect. We have a tutorial in the library.

Very handy having a system image. With a regular data backup and an Image you are set.
