  1. Windows 10 Update Assistant Error 0x8007007e

    Hi everyone,

I'm on Windows 10 and the Update Assistant keeps bugging me for months, saying that I'm getting error 0x8007007e.

I tried disabling/uninstalling Avast Antivirus, didn't work. I've restarted. I've tried "sfc /scannow" but I get "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service." I've tried it in Safe Mode as well, and it didn't work. I've tried using the Media Creation tool to create an ISO, then running the ISO in the admin account, and I get 'Windows 10 installation has failed'. I've even ran the Windows Update troubleshooter, which looked like it fixed some things, but I still got the error after.

    Here is the screenshot:
    Snaggy - easy screenshots

    Here are my system specs:
    HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC
    Model number: A1T68UA#ABA
    64-bit
    Running Windows 10 version 1607.
Before that I had Windows 7.

Is my laptop simply not compatible with this update? I have no idea what to do now.

    :)

Microsoft provides many options to get the latest feature upgrade manually. You can use:

    Upgrade assistant

    Media Creation Tool

    ISO File

to get Fall Creators update right now.

You can use the following guide having detailed Instructions on how to upgrade to the latest Feature upgrade i.e. Fall Creators update using all the three methods:

How to upgrade to Windows 10 Fall Creators update right now

    http://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2017/10/upgrade...

Media Creation tool has an Edge over the Upgrade assistant in my opinion as it offers a greater degree of flexibility of downloading and using the ISO file so that one can deploy it on multiple computers.

Hi Mario. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Avast may need its uninstall tool to be run to get its bloatware fully cleaned out:
Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal

Other steps here for overcoming Upgrade hurdles:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

But remember that Factory or Upgrade installs are inferior installs which most enthusiasts won't even run because they'd expect endless issues. Consider doing the Clean Install in this link which compiles the best possible install that will stay that way as
long as you stick with the tools and methods given:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

There is also an automated Refresh that reinstalls WIndows while shedding corrupting factory bloatware, saves your files, but doesn't clear the drive to get it cleanest:

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Hi,
    a. SFC /SCANNOW not running.
    Try
    http://www.thewindowsclub.com/window...repair-service

If you can get SFC /SCANNOW running - and only if it passes- then try

If not, then I suggest you proceed to prepare for an in-place upgrade repair install first of your build 1607.
Before attempting that, and noting your system is elderly, please

    i. Download and install and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) to test your disk
Post a screenshot of its GUI.
To post a screenshot: use the icon above your post to the left of the video icon.
ii. If that's ok from an admin command prompt run
    chkdsk c: /scan
Post a screenshot of the result.

  6. Doing net start trustedinstaller worked but I still get the same error with sfc /scannow. I will try HDS now

EDIT: Thanks Caledon Ken I'll try that too

It's a good idea to do the disk checks- Caledon Ken's link focusses on the SoftwareDistribution folder- that's included in the link I posted with a lot more.

However, if your disk proves ok, and chkdsk passes, it would be worth trying Caledon Ken's link first as a short cut. f it works, great- however there may be more to fix as you are so far out of date, something's been wrong for a long while.

  9. Good news, after restarting the Update services and deleting from c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
    Screenshot

Before it used to show a ton of updates that failed. What should I do now? Update through the Assistant, or ISO? Or something before that?

As you have a 1709 iso, you can use that. When logged in, mount the iso, and run setup.exe.

As your disk and file system are ok, provided other Windows corruption doesn't affect the upgrade process, you may be lucky and find it works. Worth trying.

  12. Did you try the inplace / upgrade ( setup.exe) ?

If you can't get past the upgrade would you consider a clean install?

Clean installs require effort but one could argue the finished product is better.

Sorry, what failed exactly? Ignore the in-place upgrade install repair- that needs further instructions.

Do you mean attempting to upgrade failed?
If so, in what way? Was there an error message?

Please say step by step what you did and what happened.

Assuming you did what Caledon Ken suggested (the shortcut) you have much fuller instructions in my earlier post.

Or we can try the build 1607 in-place upgrade repair install, for which you need a 1607 iso if you don't already have one. I can tell you how.

    Or you can clean install...

  14. Open Services
    Stop Windows Update service
    Delete everything under c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
    Start Service
    Run setup.exe in ISO
After the installation, I get 'Windows 10 installation has failed'

Maybe I'm using the wrong ISO?

Also please note there are risks- in taking invasive action there is always a risk of ending up with an unbootable PC.

We continually advise people to protect against this and more by routinely using disk imaging (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + external storage for image sets).
