Windows 10: Windows 10 Update Failed - PC No Longer Boots Windows

I have been unable to use a PC since the latest Windows 10 update attempt. Now, after seeing a nice log page, after entering password and seeing the Welcome indicator I get this message: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. If the location is on this PC make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. If the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet and then try again. If the location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."


Once I click OK on this message and it disappears I am left with a black screen that has the start button (which doesn't react) a recycle bin image (if you click on this the message says "An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist."


I can open Task Manager and it will seem to browse the contents of the PC and show many folders, but no content in the folders.


Tried to click on the restore command and again it said it couldn't do anything because there was not a restore point to use.


Does this sound like a failed Windows 10 update and, if no other attempt to recover the OS works, could Microsoft provide a free copy on some sort of device that I could use to do a full reinstall?

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Windows Updates failed to instal

I just did step one and they have just all installed.... thank you so much.... it was quite frustrating having that update window pop up every 5 minutes and failing to instal every time
