Windows 10: Windows 10 Update issue, and a half-finished attempt to solve it.

I was trying to fix an issue I'm having on my HP laptop. For some reason, it errors every time I try to update it. This hasn't always been an issue, but it has for a while at this point. I got this error message last I tried:


2020-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1909 for x64-based Systems KB4565351 - Error 0x800f0831.


Following this, I followed the instructions to rename software distribution folders on the troubleshooting page, hoping that might help. When I tried running

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.bak

the command prompt just returned "Access Denied." I'm not sure what the previous commands did fully, but I feel I either need to undo them and look for another solution or complete this method and hopefully get this update installed. Could I get some help? The latter - completing this process - would definitely be more preferable.

you can edit the title to say "issue solved", or "fixed " with the 'thread tools' option,under 'edit title' at the top right of the OP, so other who dont read all the posts dont keep posting suggestions *Wink

It's basically what I mentioned above, small issues here and there ,but nothing to end your day.. for the most part.

I know it's anecdotal, but for my experience 95% of the time it's perfectly fine. The issues I've run into wouldn't be enough for me to roll back , but they would be enough (had I not installed it yet) ,to avoid it for another couple weeks which is why I'm suggesting it to the OP

When you finish testing the Avast suggestion, make sure that you restart your machine.

Then if the issue persists, please return to the trouble shooting list in post# 89

I think there are three steps that remain; the WU troubleshooter, reset WU components, and manual WU reset.
