  1. Windows 10 update killed hard drive - or not? Scandisk says drive OK, HP says corrupt!

I have a HP Pavilion 500-319na desktop with an 1-54460s cpu at 2.9g and 8mb ram and 2tb hard disk. It was 'born' September 2014, I bought it January 2015, and it shipped with windows 10.

However, recent updates to windows 10 pushed out by microsoft crash it. Not only crash it, but break the hard disk. It seems that HP refuse to test this machine for compatibility with new windows 10 updates, presumably because they think it is too old (4 years! and with a spec better than many new computers on market today). Microsoft also do not bother to check whether or not the machines they are firing automatic updates at have been tested by the manufacturers for compatibility. Presumably this would be relatively easy to do? Anyway, the result is that the update kills the machine. First it can log on to windows for around 2 minutes before locking up. After many reboots, eventually it will give an error message saying Hard disk error (3F1) which is an HP-generated code, and the HP diagnostics tests report a fatal hard disk error. HOWEVER, I can then power off and reboot, and when I run the windows Scandisk it reports back there are no errors on the hard disk! From command prompt I also ran wmic diskdrive get status and that comes back with Status OK OK!

So who am I to believe here, do I have a corrupted hard drive or not? HP says I do. Windows says I don't.

    :)

    Hard drive corruption

    This is to elaborate.

I recently bought a Maxtor one touch 3 500GB USB2.0 external hard drive. My motherboard has been freezing due to mutiple problems including conflicts with my version of windows xp, and my hard disk drive is now having errors saying 'The directory is corrupt and or unreadable' and only one folder is showing up which is also 'unaccessible'. The Hard drive properties all say 250GB used 220GB available [Because of formatting I'm assuming]. Based off of that, I know my files are still there. Is there any way to restore my drives files?

CANNOT DELETE A CORRUPTED FILE ON MY EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE ON WINDOWS 10

    Hi Leenus,

Hard drive and other external memory storage can be corrupted on account of bad sectors which are no longer accessible or writable due to permanent damage. Your device or hard drive could also be infected by some type of malware. These are some of the possible
causes why you are experiencing the error "ERROR 0x80070570: The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable". To address this concern, we suggest performing the following troubleshooting methods:

    Method 1

Check and repair disk errors or corrupted file system. This process can fix "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" error caused by bad sectors, virus infection or file system corruption. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Back up all of the files on the hard drive (except for the corrupted file).
    • Using Search, type CMD.
    • From the search results, right-click on Command Prompt and then choose Run as administrator.
    • On the Command Prompt window, type chkdsk /f h: (h stands for your hard drive) and then hit the Enter key.
    • Delete the corrupted file and check if you'll experience the same error.

    Method 2

Format the hard drive. You can manually format the hard drive to permanently remove "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" error. These are the steps on how to format an external drive:

    • Plug the hard drive into your computer.
    • Back up all of the files on the hard drive (except for the corrupted file).
    • Open File Explorer and then click This PC.
    • Click the external hard drive's name, click on Manage tab and then click on Format.
    • Click Start and then click OK.

Keep us updated with the result.
