Windows 10: Windows 10 Update March 31 2017

I have two HP Laptops running Windows 10 Home. Both are running well without Virus or Malware. Today I'm getting the same error from Windows Update on both computers suggesting it's a Microsoft problem.

There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help:

The issue is affecting a number of users and MS is aware of the problem and working to resolve it.

I have the same issue, hope it gets fixed soon, it's annoying.

The update gets downloaded every time and it tries to install it and keeps failing.

If it just popped up today, on both systems, and was not a problem before, I would be inclined to just let it go till tomorrow and see if it clears up. Sounds like you didn't do anything to cause it....no software installs/uninstalls or the like. Reboot both systems and check. Could be just a temporary glitch somewhere...MS or your ISP or something else. Reboot your router, too.

If it keeps occurring, we can look into it further.

Mine did the same so i opened defender and updated from there and now have 1.239.533.0

 

Does sound then that it's probably a temp MS glitch.....

Go ahead and do what insulator suggested and see if it gets you fixed. Thru the Defender GUI "Check for updates".

 

Thank you both. Chatted with MS Support who confirmed problem is known to MS. They nonetheless took over my computer and tried ti fix by Resetting Update. I had already done that, but no way to alert them once they take over and start.

I'll await the MS fix.

 

Just wanted to chip in and say this must be 100% MS error. My problems on all three PCs are identical to described here and other places. That is, update fails with message 0x800070643.
However by opening Defender and updating from there it works fine. Then windows update works fine. That is until another definition is released for defender then the process repeats exactly
the same every time.

Tried running fixit, deleting old files, running tasks etc etc. Done a lot, but not any change. I am somewhat relieved because I thought it might be a problem with some old tweaks I did to windows 10
over a year ago, but now I know that's not the case.

Two more small things:

1. This issues started 2 days ago for me (Japan time)

2. Performance monitor 1 minute diagnostic, Full DISM, and SFC scan all show NO errors at all, on all PCs, but the error persists. Pretty sloppy as auto maintainence won't run the scan (it does everything else).

I am sure there are a lot of people unaware of this who have unscanned and out of date definitions on their PCs. Why? Because I never got any pop up or error message until manual update, either win Upt, or Defender. As we know many (like my wife) never do any of this and just let everything run automated. Usually it works. This is about security so MS must make it a priority fix.

One final word on this. You're not going nuts. It did start 2 days ago, on the 31th. In mid day.

Reliability report shows it was working early on the 30th, then starting failing. Still failing right now.

Also, Defender icon is missing from the taskbar notification area. Gone..... This is on 15063.11

Anyhow your post is useful because it shows that this MS screw up causes multiple weird stuff. I wasn't going to bother posting this, but your post prompted me too. My Win Defender icon has a red cross on it, saying I may not be fully protected. What!? I open up defender, it's all green, check for updates incase, run a quick scan, get a message during the scan in yellow, "preliminary results show you may be infected with malware of a pup." Scan finishes, nothing, green, message no threats found. Icon red X still. LOL.

I know for a fact I have no pups or let alone virus or malware as I've fully scanned with other progs including malwarebytes pro. Also Defender itself contradicts itself by saying alls fine, but icon is opposite. This started at the same time, the one you mentioned, which is the same as my none nutty time. (Considering Japan is 9 hours ahead of London and 13 ahead of New York. Just kidding around it's fun. *Tongue

Seems this has multiple symtoms but so far it's proved harmless, just darn weird. Full on MS weird. *Huh They better pull their socks up and full solve, test, test again and patch this before any bigger updates. I'm thinking the creators edition.

MS never fails to surprise.

Just had a subsequent definition update that installed without any problem, looks like MS have sorted it.

 

They must be fixing it East to West, cause I still get an error....same one.
